SHELBY TOWNSHIP — If you’re looking for something fun to get you out of the house and into the fresh air, you might want to check out the third annual road rally competition that the Woman’s Life Chapter 911 will be hosting in March.

Another “Shamrocks and Shenanigans” theme to the road rally is just around the corner and will include new clues, new photos and a new time.

The group’s most recent road rally took place in October and had a Halloween theme.

“We are so excited to announce our 3rd Annual Shamrocks and Shenanigans Photo Road Rally and Scavenger Hunt to benefit Woman’s Life Chapter 911 and Sparkle Network,” Lynn Karnes, the Woman’s Life Chapter 911 president, said via email.

The road rally involves participants receiving an envelope filled with clues that they must use to figure out the next tasks to complete before time runs out.

Some tasks might ask participants to take a picture of something, figure out puzzles or ask a stranger to do something. Each task is scored with points. The team with the most points at the end wins.

Karnes said they are very excited to be partnering with Sparkle Network for this year’s event. Also, she noted that planning out events during a pandemic can be difficult, but it is still possible.

“We needed to do something that we could do and still maintain the social distancing rules,” she said.

Nineteen Mile to 26 Mile roads between Romeo Plank and Dequindre roads will be the perimeter for the road rally this time.

Participants will be asked to bring some items to help them complete the rally. The items will include a smartphone, a pencil, a highlighter, a flashlight, a $5 bill and a ruler. Participants should also be sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress according to the weather.

The event will take place rain, shine or snow at 7 p.m. March 19 in Mr. B’s Plaza near 48550 Van Dyke Ave. in Shelby Township. Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the road rally will start at 7 p.m. The goal is to be at the ending location by 9:11 p.m.

There will be first-, second- and third-place cash prizes awarded to the teams with the most points. Teams need to be back by 9:11 p.m., or five points will be deducted for each minute after.

Maureen Lietz, a member of Sparkle Network, said in an email interview that she is excited to come together with Woman’s Life to figure out how both groups can work together to make fun programs possible.

“I am excited to collaborate with the Macomb Angels as we find new ways to get our programs/events out there and keep making a difference despite what is going on around us. St. Patrick’s week has always had fun and laughter attached to it, so (I’m) happy to find something to bring fun back to this week after a tough 10-plus months,” said Lietz.

Participants who bring a bottle of dish soap for the local hygiene pantry will get 10 extra points.

The cost to participate in the road rally is $50 per car. There can be a maximum of four people per car.

Everyone is welcome to join in on the competition. All participants must prepay and preregister for the event by March 11, and no new teams will be allowed on the day of the event.

Have a few laughs
Woman’s Life will also be part of a comedy event in February ahead of the road rally.

“Woman’s Life (along with Habitat For Humanity Macomb Women’s Build arm) is also part of our Heartbreakers Comedy Event slated for (7 p.m. Feb. 13) to be held both virtually and potentially with small in-person attendance at The Emerald Theatre. We will wait to see how the restrictions continue to play out,” said Lietz.

Sparkle Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community of charities, businesses, comedy and more that creates awareness and gives a louder voice to organizations and causes based in Michigan.
