HAZEL PARK — At press time, police in Hazel Park were searching for suspects who drove a stolen truck through the front of a business to reach the ATM inside, stealing an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to police, the incident occurred at 2:15 a.m. Feb. 7 at Puffs Smoke & Vape, located at 24059 Dequindre Road, south of 10 Mile Road, in Hazel Park.

A Ford F-250 was driven through the front of the business — likely in reverse, police said — plowing through the glass windows and creating a point of entry. The truck may also have been used to knock over the ATM inside, breaking it in half and giving the thieves access to the cash drawers, which they emptied out.

The F-250 had been stolen from a home in Warren. The vehicle theft likely occurred overnight, since the owner of the vehicle had not been aware it was missing when police contacted him. The vehicle was recovered two hours after the smash-and-grab, mere blocks away in the area of Vance Avenue and Woodward Heights Boulevard.

“We don’t believe anything else was stolen from the store, but the truck made such a mess that the owner wasn’t sure if anything else was missing,” Hazel Park Police Chief Brian Buchholz said. “Obviously, driving a vehicle through your building makes quite a mess.”

He said that such incidents are rare in Hazel Park.

“I don’t even remember the last time when a smash-and-grab of this sort took place in our city,” Buchholz said.

He added that his detectives are taking the incident very seriously and following all leads.

“We have requested the store’s surveillance video,” Buchholz said. “Once we have the video, we will be able to better tell what happened here.”
