ROSEVILLE — For 50 years, people in the Roseville community have been able to count on Dale and Sue Moase when it comes to meeting landscaping needs. The couple’s business, Dale’s Landscaping Supply, is celebrating half a century in business.

Opened in 1969, Dale’s Landscaping Supply provides landscaping materials. It has allowed the Moase family to grow their interests and open additional local businesses since.

“We started in 1969 selling firewood at the corner of 13 Mile and Hayes. It’s where I grew up,” said Dale. “We moved to 13 Mile and Groesbeck in October of 1977. We expanded our services to landscaping supplies in 1983. We opened a fireplace shop from 1977 to 1981. We expanded to another location in Shelby Township in 2000. In 2005, we opened Dale’s Disposal Incorporated, which offers units for household disposals. I semi-retired in 2016.”

The landscaping business is now located at 16720 E. 13 Mile Road.

Sue Moase, Dale’s wife and the co-owner of the business, said the two of them are semi-retired now and are handing the reins of the business to their children. She thinks that continuity is important.

“Our family is all working in this business. All three of our children, Eric, Jake and Vanessa, went into the business and are the future of the business,” said Sue. “I think we’ve been a friendly face in the community for all these years. We like talking to people and meeting people, and I think that’s one of the reasons we lasted.”

Dale credited their services and loyal customer base for their longevity.

“I think our same-day service and delivery was a big reason we lasted, and our always having a big inventory,” he explained. “We stayed in Roseville because it’s always been a productive community. We’ve had many loyal customers for 30 or 40 years. It’s a great place to run a business in.”

Bob Hamilton, the former owner of Wayside Lawn Service, has been doing business with Dale and Sue for decades. He said their personal approach is what kept him coming back to them.

“Dale and Sue are pretty good people. They’re convenient, they’re close, they have what we need,” said Hamilton. “I remember Dale when he was working behind the Sunoco Gas Station at 13 Mile and Hayes chopping wood. He used to chop wood there and sell it. As our business grew, we needed more materials, and we grew together.”

He stressed that local businesses such as Dale’s Landscaping Supply are a crucial part to making a community work.

“Small businesses like this hold a community together,” he said. “If it all turns into big box stores, we’re screwed. I’m a firm believer in mom-and-pop operations. Dale and Sue have always been hands-on and are a really good example of that kind of business.”

Sue said that managing a business and a family — and keeping that business in the family — is a challenge, but one she and her husband have welcomed.

“It was an exciting adventure for me. It has its challenges, especially at the beginning when I was also raising three kids at the time,” she said. “I’ve gotten to know so many of Dale’s customers, and it’s been so great seeing the company grow and progress as time went on.”
