ROCHESTER HILLS — Fleece & Thank You will attempt to break the Guinness world record for the most people making “no-sew” fleece blankets simultaneously at one event and is requesting the help of the public.

Fleece & Thank You, according to founder Nicholas Kristock, is a nonprofit that creates and donates fleece blankets, along with supportive video messages, to children admitted to hospitals.

This month, the nonprofit is inviting the public to the third annual Make a Blanket Day noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Stoney Creek High School in Rochester Hills. There is no cost to attend.

Kristock is hoping volunteers will help the nonprofit break the current Guinness World Records mark of 2,000 no-sew fleece blankets made in eight hours by making at least 2,500 fleece blankets in four hours.

“You really only need two things: a smile and a good attitude,” he said, adding that all supplies will be provided. “If you can use scissors and tie your shoes, you can make a blanket in about 15 minutes.”

Alyssa Dorchak, the director of project management and communications for Fleece & Thank You, said anyone interested in helping can simply show up at the door the day of the event.

“It is a family-friendly event, so we are open to all ages,” she said.

Every year in Michigan alone, around 30,000 children will spend at least one night in a hospital, according to Kristock. His goal is to eventually serve all 30,000 of those children by providing them with not only a fleece blanket, but also a personalized video message from the volunteers who made it, so that the children and their families know they’re not alone in the fight to regain their health.

“The smile on their faces is like nothing you’ve ever seen,” Dorchak said. “It also has a huge effect on the families.”

Fleece & Thank You is partnering with Applied Fitness Solutions of Rochester Hills and Healthquest Physical Therapy of Rochester Hills to host the Sept. 21 event, which is sponsored by Chief Financial Credit Union. Kristock said both companies have been strong advocates of the nonprofit over the years and have hosted individual blanket-making events.

To date, Fleece & Thank You has been able to donate about 55,000 blankets to hospitalized children in Michigan. For more information, call (313) 451-3665 or visit ftyblanketday19.funraise.org.
