EASTPOINTE — The Eastpointe Police and Fire departments responded to a fatal car crash March 17 at the intersection of Gratiot and Aurora avenues.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. According to police, two vehicles collided and the striking vehicle subsequently hit a large tree. The driver of that vehicle was transported to a nearby medical facility and pronounced dead, police said.

The police reported that the driver of the other vehicle, which had been struck, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a medical facility for treatment. Gratiot was closed down for three hours while investigators looked into the cause of the crash.

“The cause of the accident is unclear at this time,” Eastpointe Director of Public Safety George Rouhib said in a Facebook post. “The police department is urging anyone that may have witnessed the accident to call us at (586) 445-5100. Our deepest condolences go out to the victim and their family.”

On March 18, Rouhib released some additional details on the crash.

“The deceased was a 52-year-old man from Saint Clair Shores,” Rouhib wrote in an email. “It appears that the victim may have had a medical issue that caused the accident, however that is not confirmed. The accident is still under investigation. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. I do not have the information on the other party.”
