CLINTON TOWNSHIP — The Clinton Township Police Department is investigating the deaths of a husband and wife after their vehicle crashed into a tree.

Sgt. Christopher Allis said the incident occurred at about 1:49 p.m. Nov. 20. The driver was identified as Jerry Polk, 71, and his wife, Pamela Polk, 66, both of Eastpointe.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the couple was in a black Ford Flex traveling northbound on Gratiot Avenue, just past Metropolitan Parkway. According to officials, “for an unknown reason,” the car drove off the roadway and struck a tree.

The crash led to a fire. As Clinton Township firefighters extinguished the flames, the pair was transported to McLaren Macomb Hospital via ambulance. They were both pronounced dead a short time later.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected as causes for the crash, Allis said. The driver may have been having a diabetic emergency just prior to the crash, according to police. Allis said the passenger had called 911 prior to the crash.

It was the third fatal crash in Clinton Township in 12 days.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Allis at (586) 615-2525, or Capt. Bruce Wade at (586) 493-7931.
