A member of the Adams High School football coaching staff has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Rochester Community Schools district.

On July 8, RCS Superintendent Robert Shaner sent an email to district families to alert them of the situation.

“We just received notice that a member of the Adams High School football coaching staff exhibited symptoms related to COVID-19 and subsequently tested positive for the virus during preliminary testing at an urgent care facility,” the email reads.

The following day, Shaner notified families that a second test had confirmed the positive results.

District officials said Adams High School football team members and coaches who were participating in voluntary conditioning may have been exposed.

As of July 9, Shaner said the Oakland County Health Division had conducted a case investigation and indicated that “it is not necessary for families to self-quarantine away from others at this time.”

He said all affected areas — including the press box, restrooms and concession stands — are being thoroughly cleaned with a disinfectant following district protocol and then are sanitized using the Clorox 360® electrostatic sprayer.

The Adams High School voluntary athletic practices resumed Monday, July 13.

“As always, if an individual develops symptoms of respiratory illness or is concerned about their well-being, they are encouraged to call their health care provider immediately,” Shaner said in the email.

Testing is available, free of charge, through the Health Department, and Shaner said individuals do not need to have symptoms of COVID-19 to be tested. To schedule a same-day appointment, contact the nurse on call at (800) 848-5533 or email noc@oakgov.com. People age 18 or older will be tested at the Health Department's north campus, 1200 N. Telegraph Road in Pontiac. Those younger than 18 years of age will be tested through Honor Community Health.

“In addition to working with the OCHD and our school nurse, we will continue to follow the state requirements for schools and the Michigan High School Athletic Association guidelines to help mitigate the spread of CODIV-19 and keep our community safe,” Shaner said in the email.

Those with questions or concerns are asked to contact Adams High School Principal Pasquale Cusumano at (248) 726-5201 or Adams Athletic Director Jason Rapp at (248) 726-5208, or to use the Talk to Us feature on the district’s website, www.rochester.k12.mi.us.
