WARREN — It’s tough to think about anything related to summer these days. Still, organizers of the annual Summerfest outreach are hoping to raise awareness of, and funds for, the program held each August.

Organizers said Summerfest was created to provide things needed the most in the city’s most depressed economic neighborhoods. They said hope is one of those things and that providing it begins with the “Taste of Hope Auction & Tastefest,” hosted by Liberty Family Outreach on March 29.

“It brings a significant amount of the budget that we need to be able to finance the event,” said Pastor Terry Frazer, of Warren’s Liberty Foursquare Church, who founded Summerfest 11 years ago and helped build it into a successful collaboration between a network of churches, the city and area businesses. “The auction, it’s a first-class event. The venue of the atrium at City Hall is wonderful.”

Tickets are $15 in advance for the Taste of Hope, which includes both live and silent auctions for a list of items including sports tickets, packages for a night on the town and a season’s worth of lawn care.

The tastefest will feature food from a list of local restaurants such as Joe’s Crab Shack and American Pie pizza.

“It’s really going to be a great night,” said Katie Miller, program coordinator for Liberty Family Outreach. “My goal is we’d like to at least raise $20,000. Really, the event has the potential to fund a majority of Summerfest if it’s done right.”

Tickets to see the Detroit Tigers on opening day, Disney Resort Park Hopper passes and a package including dinner and tickets to see Il Divo at the Fox Theatre are among the items headed to auction this year.  All of the proceeds will benefit Summerfest.

The 7th Annual Taste of Hope Auction & Tastefest will be held from 6-9 p.m. March 29 in the atrium of Warren’s City Hall, east of Van Dyke and north of 12 Mile Road.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. No one younger than 12 will be admitted.
