RAY TOWNSHIP — The Warren De La Salle golf team continued its run atop Macomb County as it claimed a fifth straight Macomb County Invitational title April 30 at Timberwood Golf Club in Ray Township.

“We played a practice round here (April 29),” said De La Salle’s Anthony Comito, who shot a low-round 72 to earn medalist honors. “We saw that the greens were really firm, so we knew we had to hit our shots a little short of the pin because of big bounces. This is a pretty young team. I didn’t expect everybody to shoot the way they did.”

The Pilots finished with a team score of 305. Ethan Tran and Chris Comito shot 76 and 77, respectively. Adam Borghardt shot an 80 and Cam Chrisman shot an 83.

The top four scores from each team factor into the final number. Sixteen teams competed in the county invite.

De La Salle coach Doug McKay broke a personal record with a fifth straight county title. McKay, who is in his 25th year leading the Pilots, had previously won four straight on two occasions.

“I’m used to us starting slow and getting better, but this year’s team is playing really well,” McKay said. “We’re a young team. The younger players do a great job of listening and sticking to their game plan, and everybody plays well. They all did a great job of managing the course. This could be a special year.”

Anthony Comito finished five shots better than the 2017 county tournament. He said his play off of the tee made the difference. He finished with 14 pars, two birdies and two bogies.

“They had the tees up higher than normal so that gave me a chance to hit a lot of wedges ,and I was able to put it close for the most part,” Anthony Comito said.

Utica Eisenhower finished second with a 311. Sam Militello led the Eagles with a 75. Eisenhower had three players finish with sub-80 rounds.

“I think today was all about hitting greens, fairways and making putts,” Militello said. “It’s great to come out and be in contention for a championship and shoot a good round among all these good players.”

Macomb Dakota took third with a score of 314. The Cougars were led by John Tranzow’s 75.

Utica Ford II finished with a 322; Anchor Bay finished with a 340; Romeo High notched a 346; Macomb L’Anse Creuse North and Macomb Lutheran North both ended at 349; Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse tallied a 357; St. Clair Shores Lake Shore finished with a 361; Clinton Township Chippewa Valley notched a 364; Utica High finished with a 374; Sterling Heights Stevenson scored a 375; Warren Cousino notched a 385; Armada High scored a 387; and St. Clair Shores Lakeview tallied a 397 to round out the field.
