CLINTON TOWNSHIP – Fraser High’s boys soccer team’s season came to an end following a 2-1 loss to Warren De La Salle Oct. 17 at Chippewa Valley.

“The boys worked hard. I just thought maybe we were a little too nervous,” Ramblers coach Thaier Mukhtar said. “You’ve got to give credit to your opponent.”

The Ramblers and Pilots battled back and forth in a tense game, with De La Salle eventually emerging and advancing to the district final, where it lost to Utica Ford II 1-0.

FAIR HAVEN – Macomb L’Anse Creuse North’s boys soccer team won its first district title since 2005 after beating Romeo High Oct. 19 with a 4-1 victory at Anchor Bay.

The Crusaders advanced to play in a regional semifinal against Birmingham Groves, played after press time. The winner plays in a 6 p.m. regional final against either Utica Ford or Grosse Pointe South at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at Fraser High. The Utica Community Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence is hosting a fundraiser to benefit athletics at all seven of the district’s junior highs beginning at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Palazzo Grande in Shelby Township.

The evening will include live entertainment, raffles and prizes, live and silent auctions, and appearances by local sports celebrities. Tickets cost $70, which includes dinner and drinks. For more information about the event, visit www.ucsfoundation.org. Cash donations are also being accepted.

Utica High’s girls golf team finished off the season with a third-place finish at the Oct. 19-20 Division 1 state finals at Forest Akers East Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State University.

Plymouth High won the D-1 team title with a final score of 659, while Farmington Hills Mercy (670) finished in second place. Utica scored 672.

Eisenhower senior Ed Covalschi had one goal in mind heading into this year’s tennis season — win a state championship.

Mission accomplished.

Covalschi, who’s committed to play for the University of Notre Dame next year, won all four of his matches at the Oct. 19-20 Division 1 finals at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

“It was definitely state title or bust,” Covalschi said. “I played high school tennis to win a state championship; that was my main goal.”

FRASER – Birmingham Groves defeated Macomb L’Anse Creuse North 4-1 in an Oct. 23 Division 1 regional semifinal soccer game at Fraser High.

The Falcons advance to a 6 p.m. Oct. 26 regional final at Fraser against Utica Ford II.

Groves got on the board early after senior Erik Lundin scored a little less than a minute into the game off an assist by senior Sam Kepes.

“The biggest key for us was the fast start,” Groves coach Jim Stachura said. “Starting off quick like that was huge. After that, everything kind of fell into place.”

“It’s huge,” senior goalkeeper and captain Chris Nowak said about the win. “Senior year, been waiting for this for four years. It’s what we’ve been dreaming of this whole season. I’s what we’ve been working for.”

FRASER — The coach walked up to his team after the game as it huddled near midfield and shouted, “We are in the playoffs!”

The team responded, all yelling, “Yeah!”

Macomb L’Anse Creuse North is back in the state football playoffs for the first time since 2007 and just the second time in program history after edging Fraser High 18-17 Oct. 12 on the road.

The win was LCN’s sixth of the season, automatically qualifying it for the postseason, which begins in two weeks.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP – Warren De La Salle advanced to a Division 1 district soccer final after topping Fraser High 2-1 Oct. 17 at Chippewa Valley.

The Pilots got a pair of goals by senior Austin Willenbrock to push past the Ramblers in a semifinal match. De La Salle plays Utica Ford II in the 5 p.m. Friday final at Chippewa. The Falcons topped Stevenson 1-0 in the second semifinal.

Following a tense, scoreless first half, the Pilots got on the board with a penalty kick goal by Willenbrock less than a minute out of halftime.

Coach Thaier Mukhtar leads his new team, Fraser High, against his old team, Warren De La Salle in what should be a tightly contested Division 1 district semifinal soccer game at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Chippewa Valley.

Mukhtar took over Fraser this season and promptly led it to the Macomb Area Conference White Division title and a 14-2-3 record overall. Reid Friedrichs now leads the Pilots, who are 10-1-10 entering the semi.

FRASER – Despite the injuries and adversity, the losses and the setbacks, Fraser High’s football team continues to battle on.

And coach Pat Threet couldn’t be more proud of his Ramblers.

“I’ve got kids who are dedicated,” Threet said. “We’re losing. We’re 1-7. No one’s quitting. They’re here every day. They show up. They’re great young men.”

Fraser’s 18-17 homecoming loss to Macomb L’Anse Creuse North Oct. 12 was full of examples of what the coach was talking about.

L’Anse Creuse volleyball can start strong, it just needs to work on finishing.

And the Lancers are hoping they can finish the season strong.

At press time, L’Anse Creuse was 0-7 in the competitive Macomb Area Conference Red Division but had lost several matches by just a couple of points, according to coach Alysia Williams.

ROSEVILLE — After starting the season 0-6, Utica High’s football team has won two straight games, picking up league wins over Anchor Bay Oct. 5 and Roseville High Oct. 12.

Utica senior Jacob Roberts recorded all three of the Chieftains’ touchdowns in the recent win at Roseville, a 21-10 decision that meant Utica ends up tied for third place in the Macomb Area Conference White Division.
