NOVI — Kids and adults alike gathered at Twelve Mile Crossing at Fountain Walk Nov. 19 for a special guest.

“Because we had this event tonight, this weekend, I asked him if he could fly in for the weekend, and he said yes, he could,” Novi Mayor Bob Gatt said, addressing the crowd.

Those in attendance needed to yell for him, Gatt said, because he was up in the sky in his sleigh. On the count of three, the entire crowd chanted for Santa Claus.

After several tries, Santa and Mrs. Claus were delivered to the courtyard in a Novi Police Department vehicle.

“We are so happy to be here tonight to see your tree-lighting,” Santa said.

After another short countdown, the tree in the center of the courtyard was lit to the sound of cheers and sleigh bells.

The tree-lighting was held as part of the inaugural Winter, Wine and Whimsy. Vendors were on hand throughout the weekend to sell homemade crafts and food. Live music was performed in the courtyard.

“Heartfelt thanks to all who supported and enjoyed Winter, Wine & Whimsy,” Sheryl Walsh-Molloy, Novi’s director of communications, said in an email. “You never know what to expect when planning a first-ever event such as this and the attendance far exceeded expectations.”
