MACOMB TOWNSHIP — The final plan for a self-storage facility was recently approved by the Macomb Township Planning Commission.

At its Sept. 15 meeting, the commission voted on a final plan for Elite Corporate Park.

The park is to be south of 23 Mile Road, west of Romeo Plank Road.

Tom Kalas, an attorney, spoke on behalf of Elite Corporate Park.

“One of the sites was previously intended for a hotel or motel, both local and national users, but with the pandemic, the hotel industry has been decimated,” he said.

Kalas added there is a site user, Safestore, an enclosed self-storage facility.

“We don’t want to delay this project any longer,” he said. “We secured engineering approval last year and a site bond was provided for development cost. We have existing and potential users and would like construction to begin this season.”

Macomb Township Planning Consultant David Scurto provided an overview of the development, calling it a site condominium development for an industrial park.

The property is zoned M-1, or light industrial and consists of seven lots.

Vice Chair Aaron Tuckfield said the reason he voted to approve the plan was in situations like this where there is a consent judgment, the commission is governed by it.

Resident Cliff Bara, who lives south of the development near the property line, said some neighbors are concerned with the shared easement with the petitioner.

“In the past, we’ve not been able to do anything on the easement, so much as a simple fence to the easement,” he said.

Bara also asked with a 2.5-story building, how will lighting be shielded from the residential neighborhood.

The commission’s next meeting scheduled for Oct. 6 has been canceled.
