METRO DETROIT — A pair of bills were approved by the Michigan legislature and signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer that increase vandalism done to houses of worship as more serious crimes than other acts of destruction of property.

SOUTHFIELD — The Oakland County Board of Commissioners’ gun buyback pilot program included four events in October 2022, with a total collection of 353 weapons, including five assault rifles, and more than $35,000 in gift cards given out in Auburn Hills, Berkley, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Lathrup Village, Royal Oak and Southfield.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN — Michigan’s outdoor recreation sector continued on a trajectory of rapid growth last year, prompting calls for greater investment in the land, water and infrastructure that underpins the industry.

METRO DETROIT — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued a call for a special election to fill the Michigan House of Representatives seats vacated by newly elected Warren Mayor Lori M. Stone and Westland Mayor Kevin Coleman, who represented District 13 and District 25, respectively.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Peter Accica served the city of St. Clair Shores as a councilman for eight years but didn’t run in the recent election due to health issues.

FERNDALE — A recount was initiated and completed for the Ferndale City Council election, and the result remained the same.
