HARPER WOODS — The Harper Woods Department of Public Safety is investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in the 19100 block of Woodside Street on Sept. 20, and her boyfriend has been charged with murder.

Police officers responded to the scene, which is in the general area of Beaconsfield Street and Moross Road, at approximately 12:58 a.m. following a 911 call that there was a dead body in the backyard of a local home. According to police, they located the body of 37-year-old Katie Lynn Elliot with wounds to her back and chest. Harper Woods police said that she had been shot one time.

The department said that the 911 call was made by her boyfriend, a 42-year-old Harper Woods man named Steven Mark Bratton, who turned himself in to officers shortly after the investigation began. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said that an argument between Bratton and Elliot escalated and that Bratton allegedly shot Elliot.

Bratton has been charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of felony firearm. He was arraigned in 32A District Court in Harper Woods Sept. 22. Judge Daniel S. Palmer denied bond to Bratton and Bratton was sent to the Wayne County Jail.

Bratton's next scheduled court dates are a probable cause conference at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, and a preliminary examination at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Bratton had not retained or been appointed an attorney prior to publication.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Harper Woods Department of Public Safety at (313) 343-2530.
