HARRISON TOWNSHIP — So far this season, the Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse girls soccer team has been dominant, but coach Scott Perez believes the team still has room to improve.

“We’ve played well overall, but we’ve only been great in spurts,” said Perez, whose team sat at 9-0-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division at press time. “Our goals for this season were to try to win our division, a district title, and overall continue to keep getting better every year. We would like everyone to know when they play us that we’ll be competitive.

“This is a special team, and I can’t wait to see them put it all together for an entire game.”

L’Anse Creuse has outscored opponents 49-4. The Lancers have been strong in every phase of the game. The team has scored at least four goals in six games and has already shut out seven opponents.

Perez credits the team’s solid offensive play. He said all of the players on the roster can score. Senior captains Abbigayle Cimini and Carmela Contesti lead the charge.

“We just need to work harder and start faster, and finish strong,” Contesti said. “We’ve got to give it 100 percent the entire game.”

Play in net has been key too, Perez said. L’Anse Creuse uses three goaltenders who all compete for playing time, but support one another when they’re not in net.

Cimini said that the defense works hard to ensure no balls get past them.

“Everyone is looking out for each other, and we push each other to be better,” Cimini said. “That’ll help us out over the course of the entire season.”

The strong start has L’Anse Creuse atop the MAC Blue. The team finished second in the league in 2018. The Lancers have waited awhile to win a division title. The team’s last league title came in 2003, but it has finished second in the league four times since 2012.

Perez said that it’s a long season, so the team focuses on one game at a time, but “it would be a great accomplishment to bring a (division) championship to L’Anse Creuse.”

“We are building a foundation to bring more division titles to our school in the future. We need to keep playing at the high level that we have been playing at,” he said. “Our intensity needs to stay high, and a positive attitude needs to stay consistent.”

The Lancers’ next game is against Madison Heights Lamphere at 7 p.m. May 1 on the road.
