AUBURN HILLS — The Grand March has been completed, meaning the 2016 state wrestling finals are underway.

Wrestlers will battle it out for All-State honors and state championships through March 5 at The Palace of Auburn Hills. A total of 56 state champions will be crowned across four divisions and 14 weight classes.

The top eight finishers in each weight class earn All-State honors.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Two Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse wrestlers culminated strong seasons by battling their way to the 2016 Division 1 state finals.

Sophomore 119-pounder Alex Backers and senior 140-pounder Jacob Girard had strong performances at a Feb. 20 Division 1 regional, which allowed them to advance to the state finals. Backers and Girard continued a streak that has seen L’Anse Creuse send at least one wrestler to the state finals for nearly 20 years in a row.

Although as teams, Clinton Township Chippewa Valley and Fraser High didn’t qualify for the state wrestling finals, both programs had wrestlers who placed in the top four at a regional at Hartland High Feb. 20, which qualified them for the individual state finals.

The wrestlers representing Chippewa are Jalen Goudelock (215 pounds) and Vinny Dolland (160). Goudelock was a regional champion.

The Macomb Dakota wrestling team had its season come to an end in a 36-16 loss to Novi Detroit Catholic Central in a Division 1 state quarterfinal Feb. 26 at Central Michigan University.

The Cougars ended the season at 27-12.

Catholic Central led the match 24-0 before Dakota mounted a comeback that fell just short.

Catholic Central then lost to Davidson High 29-25 in a semifinal Feb. 27 at CMU. Hartland High downed Davidson 36-23 Feb. 27 to claim its first state title. Hartland had advanced to five state title matches prior to the win.

MOUNT PLEASANT — The Gaylord High and Warren Woods Tower wrestling teams put on a back-and-forth battle at the Division 2 state semifinals Feb. 26 at Central Michigan University that saw Gaylord eek out a 31-26 win over Tower.

Holding a slim 28-26 lead heading into the final match, Gaylord 140-pounder Brady Schulz got an 8-4 decision on Tower’s Nico Martini to seal the win.

MOUNT PLEASANT — The Novi Detroit Catholic Central wrestling team kept its drive for a 12th state title alive with a 36-16 win over Macomb Dakota in a Division 1 state quarterfinal Feb. 26 at Central Michigan University.

The Shamrocks (16-5) advance to take on Davidson High (23-4) in a semifinal at 10 a.m. Feb. 27 at CMU. The winner of that match takes on either Oxford High (24-8) or Hartland High (32-1) in a state title match at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at CMU.

WARREN — Farmington High wrestling fell in a Division 2 team regional semifinal Feb. 17 at Warren Woods Tower.

The Falcons lost to Melvindale High 63-16.

“We did better than we thought we would at the beginning of the season, but it’s a little disappointing to finish with a match like this,” Farmington coach Courtland Barlett said.

Things looked good early for the Falcons. Farmington opened the match with a first-round pin from Jake Justice at 130 pounds for the 6-0 lead.

FRASER — For the third consecutive season, Macomb Dakota’s wrestling team knocked Fraser High out of the postseason, with the Cougars’ latest triumph coming via a 34-28 win at a Division 1 regional final Feb. 17 at Fraser.

In the last bout of the match, with the score tied at 28, Dakota got a pin from 125-pounder Nick Barrett to secure the program’s third regional title in the last four years.

Last season, Dakota came away with a 37-33 victory against the Ramblers in a district final matchup.

Following the loss in a Division 1 regional semifinal, Rochester Adams wrestling coach Mike Holtz had nothing but positive things to say about his squad.

The Highlanders fell to Utica Eisenhower 49-16 Feb. 17 at Rochester High.

“At the end of the day, we believe in ourselves. The boys believe in themselves, they believe in who they are and what they’re about, and we just got beat by a better team, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” Holtz said. “Eisenhower is just a better team than we are, and that’s OK.”

WARREN — The journey came to an end for the Madison Heights Lamphere wrestling squad after falling to host Warren Woods Tower 60-8 Feb. 17 in a Division 2 regional semifinal.

“We knew Warren Woods Tower was tough, and coming into their house, they wrestled the way I expected them to,” Lamphere coach Russ McKenzie said.

Two grapplers recorded victories for Lamphere, with Alex Peace earning an 8-4 decision at 152 pounds and Matt Tomsett winning via a major decision 10-0 in the final bout of the match.

ROCHESTER — Utica Eisenhower wrestling pushed Oxford High to the limit in a regional final Feb. 17 at Rochester High.

In the end, the Eagles fell just short of claiming a regional title, as Oxford won its seventh regional title in eight years by a score of 33-28.

Following district and regional tournaments across the state, the best grapplers in their respective weight classes converge on the Palace of Auburn Hills for the individual state finals.

The final tournament runs March 3-5.

The festivities begin with the Grand March at 1:45 p.m. March 3, followed by the first round bouts.

On March 4, action starts at 8:30 a.m. and culminates with the semifinals starting at 7 p.m.

When the clock expired and the wrestling team recorded another regional championship, the Tower gym erupted.

The Titans (22-6) claimed a Division 2 regional title with a 54-21 victory against Melvindale High Feb. 17. It was the program’s second championship in three years, but first in its own gym.

Tower started the final with three straight pins and never looked back.

FRASER — The St. Clair Shores Lakeview wrestling team has a lot to be proud of after the season it had.

The Huskies bounced back to finish second in the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division after placing fifth in the division in 2014-15. Lakeview won the league in the 2013-14 season.

The Huskies’ strong campaign carried over into the postseason, winning the program’s first district title since 2005 in a 42-33 win over Grosse Pointe North Feb. 11 at Grosse Pointe South.

ROCHESTER — Oxford High’s wrestling team is returning to the state quarterfinals after defeating Utica Eisenhower 33-28 in a regional final Wednesday night at Rochester High.

Oxford will be making their seventh trip to the state quarterfinals over the past eight years.

“This one is really exciting,” Oxford coach Paul McDevitt said. “It’s been a long time since I had the feeling I had today, I was nervous all day.”

GROSSE POINTES — The wrestling teams from Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South had their respective seasons come to a close at a Division 1 district tournament Feb. 11 at South.

After defeating Eastpointe East Detroit 63-9 in the semifinal round, the Norsemen lost a district final contest to St. Clair Shores Lakeview 42-33.

At one point in the match, North had a 24-3 advantage before the Huskies rallied back to claim their first district championship since 2007, according to head coach Steve Nicholl.

FARMINGTON — Farmington High wrestling is heading to the team regional round.

The Falcons earned the spot after winning a Division 2 district championship Feb. 10 at home.

After drawing a bye in the first round, Farmington dispatched Redford Union 42-36 for the title. 

In the semifinal, Farmington Hills Harrison fell to Union 42-30.

Up next for the Falcons is a regional semifinal against Melvindale High Feb. 17 at Warren Woods Tower.
