Following the loss in a Division 1 regional semifinal, Rochester Adams wrestling coach Mike Holtz had nothing but positive things to say about his squad.

The Highlanders fell to Utica Eisenhower 49-16 Feb. 17 at Rochester High.

“At the end of the day, we believe in ourselves. The boys believe in themselves, they believe in who they are and what they’re about, and we just got beat by a better team, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” Holtz said. “Eisenhower is just a better team than we are, and that’s OK.”

WARREN — The journey came to an end for the Madison Heights Lamphere wrestling squad after falling to host Warren Woods Tower 60-8 Feb. 17 in a Division 2 regional semifinal.

“We knew Warren Woods Tower was tough, and coming into their house, they wrestled the way I expected them to,” Lamphere coach Russ McKenzie said.

Two grapplers recorded victories for Lamphere, with Alex Peace earning an 8-4 decision at 152 pounds and Matt Tomsett winning via a major decision 10-0 in the final bout of the match.

FRASER — The Macomb Dakota wrestling team this postseason could be garnering a reputation as a team that lives for high drama.

That was no more evident than in the Cougars’ 34-28 win over Fraser High in a Division 1 regional final Feb. 17 at Fraser.

The match was tied at 28 heading into the final bout. Dakota 125-pounder Nick Barrett scored a pin early in the third period to give his team a win and a trip to Mount Pleasant for the state quarterfinals. The Cougars (17-4 overall) face Hartland High at 2 p.m. Feb. 26 at Central Michigan University.

ROCHESTER — Utica Eisenhower wrestling pushed Oxford High to the limit in a regional final Feb. 17 at Rochester High.

In the end, the Eagles fell just short of claiming a regional title, as Oxford won its seventh regional title in eight years by a score of 33-28.

Following district and regional tournaments across the state, the best grapplers in their respective weight classes converge on the Palace of Auburn Hills for the individual state finals.

The final tournament runs March 3-5.

The festivities begin with the Grand March at 1:45 p.m. March 3, followed by the first round bouts.

On March 4, action starts at 8:30 a.m. and culminates with the semifinals starting at 7 p.m.

WARREN — With 17 seconds left in the final match of the night, the applause started on the Warren Woods Tower wrestling team’s sideline.

When the clock expired and the wrestling team recorded another regional championship, the Tower gym erupted.

The Titans (22-6) claimed a Division 2 regional title with a 54-21 victory against Melvindale High Feb. 17. It was the program’s second championship in three years, but first in its own gym.

Tower started the final with three straight pins and never looked back.

FRASER — The St. Clair Shores Lakeview wrestling team has a lot to be proud of after the season it had.

The Huskies bounced back to finish second in the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division after placing fifth in the division in 2014-15. Lakeview won the league in the 2013-14 season.

The Huskies’ strong campaign carried over into the postseason, winning the program’s first district title since 2005 in a 42-33 win over Grosse Pointe North Feb. 11 at Grosse Pointe South.

ROCHESTER — Oxford High’s wrestling team is returning to the state quarterfinals after defeating Utica Eisenhower 33-28 in a regional final Wednesday night at Rochester High.

Oxford will be making their seventh trip to the state quarterfinals over the past eight years.

“This one is really exciting,” Oxford coach Paul McDevitt said. “It’s been a long time since I had the feeling I had today, I was nervous all day.”

GROSSE POINTES — The wrestling teams from Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South had their respective seasons come to a close at a Division 1 district tournament Feb. 11 at South.

After defeating Eastpointe East Detroit 63-9 in the semifinal round, the Norsemen lost a district final contest to St. Clair Shores Lakeview 42-33.

At one point in the match, North had a 24-3 advantage before the Huskies rallied back to claim their first district championship since 2007, according to head coach Steve Nicholl.

FARMINGTON — Farmington High wrestling is heading to the team regional round.

The Falcons earned the spot after winning a Division 2 district championship Feb. 10 at home.

After drawing a bye in the first round, Farmington dispatched Redford Union 42-36 for the title. 

In the semifinal, Farmington Hills Harrison fell to Union 42-30.

Up next for the Falcons is a regional semifinal against Melvindale High Feb. 17 at Warren Woods Tower.

FRASER — The Fraser High wrestling team outlasted Roseville High 42-27 in a grueling match Feb. 11 to claim a Division 1 district championship.

“Everybody wrestled really hard tonight,” Fraser coach Rick Julien said.

The district title is the first for the Ramblers since 2014. Fraser fell by four points to Macomb Dakota last year in a district final.

The team portion of the wrestling season came to a close for Troy High and Troy Athens, as both squads fell in the Division 1 district semifinals Feb. 11 at Utica High.

Troy lost to the host 59-23.

Coach Jon Thomas said he was missing more than one-third of his starting lineup due to injuries and illnesses.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — The St. Clair Shores Lakeview wrestling team downed Grosse Pointe North 42-33 Feb. 11 in a Division 1 district final to win its first district title since 2005.

The Huskies (22-11) advanced to take on Fraser High (29-6) in a D-1 regional semifinal at 5 p.m. Feb. 17 at Fraser. Fraser beat Roseville High 42-27 in a D-1 district final Feb. 11 to advance.

To get to the district final, Lakeview bested host Grosse Pointe South 45-35. Grosse Pointe North beat Eastpointe East Detroit 68-9 to get to the district final.

CLAWSON — Katlyn Pizzo comes from a family of wrestlers, but she never thought she’d be one herself.

Her older brothers, Anthony and Joe, both wrestled for Clawson High. Her younger brother, Michael, wrestles as well. She said her interest in the sport stemmed from joining Michael in trying out a club team.

MADISON HEIGHTS — Ferndale High boys wrestling coach John Bassier was proud of his squad’s effort.

The Eagles had just gone toe-to-toe with Madison Heights Lamphere in a Division 2 team district final Feb. 10.

“We wrestled real well. Unfortunately, we had two voids, which made it harder,” Bassier said following the 41-28 loss.

Of the 14 matches, each squad came out the victor seven times, but Lamphere made its mark with four pins compared to Ferndale’s zero.

Missing two starters heading into a Division 1 team wrestling district, Rochester Adams coach Mike Holtz knew it would be a battle.

“The odds were stacked against us. I told the guys that we can do one of two things: ‘We can take it on and take it over, or take it on and let it take us over,’” Holtz remembered.

The Highlanders took on the challenge and beat Lake Orion High 36-27 Feb. 11 in the final for the program’s first back-to-back district championships since 1998-99.

The Macomb Dakota wrestling team downed Anchor Bay High 29-28 Feb. 11 to claim a Division 1 district championship.

The Cougars, 15-4 at press time, took on Sterling Heights Stevenson in a D-1 regional semifinal Feb. 17, after press time.

To get to the district final, Dakota beat Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (1-8) in a district semifinal. Anchor Bay advanced to the district final with a win over Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse in a district semi.
