BERKLEY — The final game served as the perfect parallel to the entire season.

Trailing by a run in last Monday’s Division 1 district semifinal against Troy High, Tom Whinham watched as his Berkley High baseball team clawed back to take a 2-1 lead, only to fall 3-2 in extra innings.

“Very close loss,” Whinham said. “It’s kind of the story of our season. There were so many close losses that came down to the very end.”

The Bears ended the season 10-16-1.

DETROIT — The plan was straightforward and simple.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s baseball coach Matt Petry was going to use his ace pitcher, Greg Loukinen, for three innings in Tuesday’s tilt against Dearborn Divine Child.

After all, it had been just three days since Loukinen was instrumental on the mound, pitching six innings Saturday while helping guide the Eaglets to a regional title and into the Division 2 quarterfinal at Wayne State University.

ROYAL OAK — The storm was one thing, but the Parkway Christian offense was even more of threat to the Royal Oak Shrine baseball team on May 30 in a Division 4 district final.

By the time the top half of the first inning ended, Shrine trailed 7-0, and the umpires postponed the game due to weather.

Things resumed June 1, and the rest of the game, “played out closer to the way we thought the whole thing would,” coach Dan Noble said of what eventually was a 9-1 loss for his guys.

ROCHESTER — After throwing a complete-game shutout against Rochester High to win a district title on June 1, Utica Eisenhower coach Jason Gendreau thought he had seen the very best of senior pitcher Pete Zeimis.

Zeimis, however, still had some gas left in the tank for a regional semifinal against No. 6 Brother Rice on June 6.

Zeimis pitched another complete game while giving up only three hits in an eight-inning gem. His walk-off base hit to center in the bottom of the eighth secured Eisenhower’s first win in regional play in school history.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — Some things have changed over the past couple of years here, and Eric Pierce has had a front row seat to it.

The West Bloomfield High baseball coach had a team last year that never backed down, pulled off a huge upset of Brother Rice in the playoff opener, and was a hit or two away from the state quarterfinals.

A year later, and the same mentality holds true.

STERLING HEIGHTS — Macomb Dakota baseball coach Matt Carley earlier this season said he was looking for consistency from his young team.

Carley’s Cougars were able to find that consistency to the tune of a 25-win season, giving Dakota its fourth straight 20-win campaign.

The season came to a close after the Cougars fell 12-6 to Sterling Heights Stevenson in a Division 1 district semifinal May 30 at Stevenson. Dakota, which won district titles in 2011, 2013 and 2014 under Carley, ended the season at 25-9.

LATHRUP VILLAGE — The first goal was one this program had known so many times over the past decade or so, but a tough loss in the final division game of the regular season assured the Lathrup baseball team second place in the Oakland Activities Association Gold Division, at best.

MADISON HEIGHTS — In his own words, it “felt like a state championship game.”

In reality, it’s May, and this was a predistrict contest.

“But it’s a huge start for us,” Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett baseball coach Dan Cimini said with a smile following a 3-1 victory at Madison Heights Bishop Foley on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s a gigantic win. I mean, with the programs we both have the past four or five years, it’s huge.”

WEST BLOOMFIELD — Always a bridesmaid.

It’s an analogy that Eric Pierce could only laugh at last week, mainly because, “well, it’s been true,” the West Bloomfield High baseball coach said.

It used to be true, anyway.

For the first time since 1998, the Lakers ended the regular season without looking up in the final standings. For the first time in 17 springs, West Bloomfield was the main attraction in Oakland Activities Association division play.
