A couple was physically unharmed after they were robbed by a man with a semi-automatic handgun Sunday morning in the driveway of their home, police said.

Warm weather and sunny skies set the backdrop for the annual event, attracting more than 40,000 vehicles and 1.2 million people from throughout the world.

White Lake resident Eric Baum said he never misses the cruise and stops by each community with his 1968 Ford Mustang fastback painted dark emerald green with a gold side stripe.

ROYAL OAK — The time is here to motor into town for the 23rd annual Woodward Dream Cruise.

The annual event officially takes place 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, on the iconic roadway from Ferndale north to Pontiac.

Greg Rassel, president of the Woodward Dream Cruise board, said this year, Ford has stepped in as the presenting sponsor, and the event expects to attract more than 40,000 vehicles and 1.2 million people from throughout the world.

ROYAL OAK — The Detroit Zoo will be adding another attraction to its repertoire next year, only this time, it does not exactly belong with the other animals.

Buddy’s Pizza announced that it will be opening a 4,434-square-foot restaurant inside the Detroit Zoo next spring. The restaurant will be located just west of the Ford Education Center, will seat 155 guests — 80 indoors and 75 on an outdoor patio and rooftop deck — and will offer a view of Rackham Fountain.

ROYAL OAK — Last week, police were still investigating the circumstances of a collision in which a 56-year-old Center Line motorcyclist died Aug. 8 after hitting a van that was crossing northbound Woodward Avenue to Northwood Boulevard.

Law enforcement officials said the motorcyclist was rushed to Beaumont Hospital, where he died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Police said the driver of the van was not injured.

ROYAL OAK/CLAWSON — City officials from Royal Oak and Clawson say all residents will receive their new South Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority 65-gallon recycling carts by mid- to late August.

More than half of Royal Oak residents had received delivery of the carts to their homes as of last week, with the remainder scheduled for delivery in the coming weeks.

Royal Oak Director of Public Services and Recreation Greg Rassel said the city is a little ahead of schedule.

CLAWSON — When retired veteran Phil Weitlauf learned about an abandoned canine graveyard years ago, even he couldn’t have imagined what the western Oakland County property would come to mean to him and service dogs throughout the United States.

“I went to investigate it, and in the middle of the cemetery was a big monument that said, ‘War dogs.’ It had some writing on it, and it was erected in 1946,” he said, adding that he learned it was created in 1936 and abandoned in the mid-1980s.

The annual event officially will take place Aug. 19 and stretch from Ferndale north to Pontiac. The happening is always held the third Saturday in August, although residents in the cruise communities know that the event starts unofficially weeks before.
