EAST LANSING — Farmington Hills Mercy pitcher Andrea Elmore threw a third strike, good for the third out and the program’s first softball state championship.

The Marlins beat Macomb Dakota 4-0 June 18 in the Division 1 final at Michigan State University.

Following the third strike, the mitts that had treated Mercy so well were tossed in the air and the celebration began.

“It feels so great. I’m so glad we were able to do this for our school and for each other,” Mercy’s Nicole Belans said.

ORCHARD LAKE — Three feet stood between Devin Deogun and a Division 2 golf state championship. 

The Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood senior had put himself in position for birdie, giving himself two putts for the title in the first playoff hole June 11 in Battle Creek.

The Berkley High boys golf team entered the postseason with some added pressure.

First was the Division 1 district tournament May 25 at Huron Meadows. The Bears made the cut, taking the sixth and final qualifying spot by two strokes.

“I think a lot of teams didn’t give us a chance,” coach Scott Baltes said.

A week later came the regional tourney; the Bears finished 12th, ending their year.

The boys golf season has come to a finish with state final action at locations across the state.

Here’s a look at the final scorecards and the local teams and athletes that found themselves near the top of the field June 10-11.

In the final, teams sent out five players with the top four scores counting toward the team over the two-day event. Individuals who finished in the top three of nonqualifying teams at the regional round also competed.

Madison Heights Bishop Foley softball coach John Ploskonka was relieved.

The Ventures had just won a Division 3 district championship, beating Clinton Township Clintondale 12-1 in five innings June 4 at home to earn the program’s first district title since 2012, and it came against the team that beat Foley in the final last season.

Anika Yarlagadda found herself in an unfamiliar spot.

The West Bloomfield High freshman was trailing 4-1 in the second set of the No. 1 singles state championship match June 4 in Midland.

Yarlagadda had already won the first set against Grosse Pointe South’s Raven Neely 6-1 as expected. After all, Yarlagadda hadn’t lost a match this season or even a set.

HOWELL — With the Division 1 boys lacrosse state championship on the line, Birmingham Brother Rice and Novi Catholic Central were tied early in the third quarter when Rice coach Ajay Chawla pulled aside his captain, Morgan Macko.

“He said, ‘You need to take over right now. This is your team. Lead the way,’” Macko remembered.

The senior didn’t let his coach down, assisting on three straight scores to help lead Rice to a 10-8 victory June 11 at Parker Middle School.

SOUTHFIELD — Southfield Christian pitcher Emma Paryaski knew the pitch was good as soon as it left her hand.

When the ball hit the catcher’s mitt, it was good for a swinging third strike and gave the Eagles their first district championship since 2012, beating Sterling Heights Parkway Christian 12-0 in six innings in the Division 4 final June 4 at home.

“It’s been a while. Coming back from last year when we only had two wins all season and completely turning it all around, it feels great,” Paryaski said.

FARMINGTON HILLS — Jillian Smith, daughter of Kristin and Brian Smith, a seventh-grader at Our Lady of Sorrows in Farmington Hills and a member of Triumph Lacrosse, has been named as a 2016 Brine National All-Star and has been selected to represent the state of Michigan at the Brine National Lacrosse Academy and Brine National Lacrosse Classic July 19-22 in Richmond, Virginia.

EVERLY HILLS — It took 20 seconds for Hazel Park High girls soccer to take control of the Division 2 quarterfinal June 1 at Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day.

The Vikings beat Warren Fitzgerald 4-1, led by Kara Martin’s score moments after the opening whistle.

“It was the fastest goal I had ever seen,” Hazel Park coach Denis Dixon said. “Then it took us the rest of the game to put three more in. We were peppering their goalie.”

Martin finished with two scores and teammates Kendra Nash and Elizabeth Sterner each had one.
