DEARBORN — Birmingham Groves’ historic football season came to a close with a 14-7 loss to Detroit Martin Luther King in a Division 2 semifinal Nov. 19 at Dearborn High.

Following an interception by Groves’ Maurice Kelley with a little less than three minutes remaining the game, Groves got within 29 yards of the end zone before its final drive stalled.

After the Falcons failed to convert on a fourth-down play, King ran out the clock to earn a trip to the state finals.

Sustaining drives was a problem for Groves for the majority of the game.

Like it had done all season long, when the Rochester High girls golf team had its best on the course, the Falcons were unbeatable.

Rochester blitzed the field in the Division 1 state final Oct. 14-15 at Michigan State University, finishing with a team-total 618, which was 21 strokes better than the closest competition.

Coach Jeff Haney said he didn’t necessarily expect the large margin of victory, but he believed he had the team to beat.

METRO DETROIT — The best amateur golfers in the world are taking the fairways of Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield  Hills Aug. 15-21 for the U.S. Amateur Championship, and there are a handful of local players who have made the field.

At the qualifier July 11 hosted by Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield, Shelby Township’s Anthony Sorentino earned a spot after finishing third in the tournament with 142 over 36 holes.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — West Bloomfield resident and tennis ace Denali Kitayama recently proved that seeding in a tournament is just a number.

Kitayama entered the 16-and-under United States Tennis Association Midwest Closed Junior Championship as the No. 28 seed and left the court with little doubt that he was the best.

ROCHESTER HILLS — Former local prep star Colin Kaline will once again make a dugout in Oakland County his home.

The 2007 Birmingham Groves graduate has been named co-coach of the Oakland University men’s baseball program along with Jacke Healey

Kaline, who is the grandson of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline, coached the hitters and infield the last three seasons at Florida Southern, where he helped lead the team to a No. 7 ranking nationally this past season.

FARMINGTON HILLS — Coach Wilson’s Basketball Camp is coming to Farmington Hills Harrison July 25-29.

Stefon Wilson, who coaches the boys varsity basketball team at Harrison, is welcoming boys and girls between ages 8 and 15 to learn the fundamentals, teamwork, sportsmanship and conditioning of the game.

The 116th United States Amateur Championship is set for Aug. 15-21 at Oakland Hills Country Club, and fans have a chance to see some of the best golfers in the area compete for a spot in the tournament field. 

The Golf Association of Michigan is hosting qualifying tournaments at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield (July 11), Forest Akers West in East Lansing (July 15) and Katke-Cousins Golf Course in Rochester (July 18). An event was played at Egypt Valley Country Club after press time.

EAST LANSING — Heading into this season, the Macomb Dakota softball program had won only one district championship and never raised a regional trophy.

But here the Cougars were, under a pitch-perfect blue sky battling for the Division 1 state championship June 18 at Michigan State University.

Keeping a one-run difference for most of the game, the Cougars fell to Farmington Hills Mercy 4-0, ending a season the program had never seen before.

EAST LANSING — Pontiac Notre Dame Prep’s Eileen Haig hadn’t been in this situation since she played goalie for her club team a couple years ago.

Yet here she was in the Division 2 state final June 18 against Forest Hills Northern getting her number called to go into the net for the shootout.

“I knew my team was behind me no matter what, and I just had to go in there and do the best that I could, and I did that,” Haig said.

EAST LANSING — Farmington Hills Mercy pitcher Andrea Elmore threw a third strike, good for the third out and the program’s first softball state championship.

The Marlins beat Macomb Dakota 4-0 June 18 in the Division 1 final at Michigan State University.

Following the third strike, the mitts that had treated Mercy so well were tossed in the air and the celebration began.

“It feels so great. I’m so glad we were able to do this for our school and for each other,” Mercy’s Nicole Belans said.
