STERLING HEIGHTS — It’s not every day that a teen gets to put an artistic spin on a toy line set for nationwide distribution, but that’s the turn Stevenson High School graduate Ryan Bryer’s life has taken.

Bryer, 19, from Macomb Township, has designed colorful animal art illustrations for a new product line of toys called Skeezix, which was set to debut in June. He said he did the artwork for the Skeezix animal characters, as well as for the promotional materials and animation work.

While Bryer said he previously drew art for friends and made comics as a kid, this was a chance to step up as a professional.

“I was very excited, because this is the first opportunity that I got to use my passion for art for making a living,” he said.

Bryer, who attends Macomb Community College, graduated from Stevenson in 2016. He said his father found the job posting from Choose Friendship Co., which produces the Skeezix, on a job listing site in 2017.

After hearing about the opportunity, Bryer said, he sent in artwork samples and did an interview, and he was hired for the assignment last December. He then got to work making the animal illustrations, posters, animations and videos.

David Crorey, owner of Choose Friendship Co., said he has been in the toy inventing business since 2009. He added that he owns 17 patents and 15 trademarks in the toy industry.

Crorey, from Clinton Township, said he started making toys after retiring from the automotive industry, when his granddaughters wanted to make friendship bracelets. He invented a device that helps make the bracelets, and he then sold many thousands of the product, he said. That led to a desire to make more toys and an entire line of craft products.

According to Crorey, a Skeezix is a collectible fidget spinner toy for kids that can spin on a pencil. The Skeezix toy can also connect to other toys in the same line, he said.

Crorey praised Bryer for his artwork and contributions to the Skeezix brand, adding that Bryer gets the concept behind the idea and the characters.

“All of the characters are delightful that he does,” Crorey said. “The bonus is that he does animations for us … and he does the voiceover, and it’s so cute.

“And the one thing I love about him is when we do need some changes, he says it’s not a problem — it’s part of the process.”
