SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Gene L. Klida Utica Academy for International Studies joined 153 of the top quiz bowl teams from small public high schools at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare Chicago for the 2025 Small School National Championship Tournament to determine who was the best April 26.

MADISON HEIGHTS — Nearly 58% of participating voters rejected a Lamphere Schools tax proposal during the special election May 6. The proposal would have raised taxes by hundreds of dollars each year to pay for enhancements at buildings across the district.

MOUNT CLEMENS — Residents of the Mount Clemens Community Schools district delivered a resounding defeat to the district’s bond proposal on May 6, with 1,843 votes against the proposal versus the 912 votes in favor.

TROY — Troy High School social studies teacher Ryan Werenka has been selected for the 2025 James Madison Fellowship, an award presented annually by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation.

SOUTHFIELD — Forever Illustrating Real Entertainment — F.I.R.E. — partnered with The Church of Messiah, Seize the Smoke and four metro Detroit schools for the 2025 “Silence the Violence” Battle of the Bands. The event was dedicated to encouraging youth to pick up instruments instead of weapons.

TROY — Community members are set to have an opportunity to view the work of a wide variety of robotics teams during the Troy Public Library’s (TPL) second annual Robotics Demonstration Day in the auxiliary gym at Troy High School.

NOVI — Aarush Arun, a sophomore at Novi High School, volunteers his time regularly. Last year alone, he volunteered around 105 hours. However, he said many people he knows are having trouble finding volunteer opportunities that fit their interests.

ROCHESTER — Staff musicians and students from West Middle School are coming together to spread joy through melody, while fighting against childhood cancer.

FERNDALE — After winning a state championship at the end of last year, Ferndale Middle School’s robotics team flew to Texas this month to compete in the world championships.

WARREN — Last month, the Warren Consolidated Schools Board of Education reported the successful sale of its 2025 school building and site bonds, known as the “2025 Bonds.”

WARREN — Community members who reside in the Fitzgerald Public Schools district will be asked to consider two ballot proposals in the Aug. 5 election.

ROSEVILLE — When community members gather May 10 for the annual Joe Manfreda Dream Dash at Roseville High School, they will not only help raise money for college scholarships, they will honor the memory of Manfreda.

MADISON HEIGHTS — May 7 is Older Michiganians Day, raising appreciation for seniors and awareness for the issues they face. Seniors and groups advocating on their behalf will flock to Lansing to meet with legislators and enjoy the beautiful historic buildings at the state capital.

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Public School District, in partnership with the Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce, is set to host its first business showcase from 5 to 7:30 p.m. May 7 at Farmington High School, located at 32000 Shiawassee Road in Farmington.

MADISON HEIGHTS — On May 6, voters in the Lamphere Schools will decide whether to raise their taxes by hundreds of dollars each year to fund an auxiliary gym, fine arts studio, robotics lab, roofing, security, theater upgrades and more.
