These ‘Outstanding Teachers’ have class

HAZEL PARK — On May 7, voters in the Hazel Park Public Schools district will decide the fate of a $150 million school improvement bond, to be paid over the next 30 years.

KEEGO HARBOR — Heading into a West Bloomfield School District Board of Education meeting March 18, some residents were hoping that board members would reverse course on a previous decision to approve demolition of the Roosevelt Elementary School building in Keego Harbor.

NOVI — Heather Stewart, a kindergarten teacher at Deerfield Elementary School in Novi, was named the Novi Community School District Educator of the Year March 18.

SOUTHFIELD — Since the Bussey Center for Early Childhood Education relocated from 19080 W. 12 Mile Road to 24501 Fredrick St. in 2020, the building has sat vacant.

CLAWSON — Clawson middle and high school students jumped into their second year of the Polar Plunge fundraising event for Special Olympics Feb. 29.

NOVI — The Novi Community School District came together during Wish Week at the schools March 12-15 to help make the wishes of two chronically ill children come true.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Cranbrook robotics teams recently competed in the state championships, where four out of eight Cranbrook Upper School robotics teams qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas in April. Only 16 teens were awarded world-qualifying spots.

FRASER — Several families in the Fraser Public Schools district are taking issue with a decision to change the colors of the caps and gowns used by graduating high school seniors.

TROY — One Troy teacher flew high and went on an out-of-this-world trip to benefit her students.

SOUTHFIELD — On Feb. 23, Lawrence Technological University received a $446,867 grant from the National Institutes of Health to create close chemical cousins of bisphenol A (BPA).

FERNDALE — A new superintendent has been selected for Ferndale Public Schools. The Ferndale Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously for Camille Hibbler to become the superintendent at its March 5 meeting. She succeeds Bobbie Hayes Goodrum, who resigned from the position at the end of last year.

HAZEL PARK — Hazel Park Public Schools has secured state funds to help revamp Longfellow Elementary with after-school and community programming.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP/UTICA/STERLING HEIGHTS — Henry Ford II High School theater students won a great deal of recognition for their acting, technical and personal skills at the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association One-Act Play State Finals Feb. 18 at Wayne State University.

EASTPOINTE/ROSEVILLE — Several local teachers dedicated to educating their students are being recognized next month for the lifelong impact they are leaving.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — On March 8, Lake Shore High School, in collaboration with celebrity fashion stylist Johnny Wujek and JCPenney, announced to the senior class that a $50,000 donation has been made to help with prom costs for attending students.

TROY — Troy’s robotics teams will show off their ingenuity and hard work during a demonstration hosted by the Troy Public Library Saturday, April 27.

NOVI — The nonprofit Novi Youth Assistance is bringing back the Silver Lining Mentor Program this month and is in need of volunteers.

WARREN/STERLING HEIGHTS — After 36 years in education, Warren Consolidated Schools Superintendent Robert Livernois has decided to retire.

EASTPOINTE — An investment adviser will help Eastpointe Community Schools with its $36.4 million bond issue that passed at the polls Aug. 8, 2023.
