STERLING HEIGHTS — Sterling Heights Stevenson (1-2) faced a brutal week-one loss to West Bloomfield, but they weren’t going to make the same mistake twice as they hosted St. Clair Shores Lakeview.

Down eight points with a minute and 16 seconds to go, all the pressure was on Stevenson’s freshman quarterback Andrew Knight.

With their backs against the wall, Knight connected with senior wide receiver Keion Singletary on fourth down for the game-tying touchdown. Still down two points, Knight shined once more as he found Lucas Timbuc for the two-point conversion.

Knight and Singletary connected again in overtime on a beautiful throw and catch in the right corner of the end zone as Singletary went full-extension to make the grab. Singletary’s catch earned Stevenson the win over Lakeview. Knight threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground.

“He (Knight) handled the moment like a senior,” Stevenson coach Justin Newcomb said.

Singletary, who scored Stevenson’s final two touchdowns, finished with 10 receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Alex DeLorey rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown for Stevenson in the win.

Stevenson opened up the scoring as they took an early 14-0 lead, but Lakeview tacked on a score and two-point conversion to make it 14-8 at halftime.

Scoring would stall in the third quarter, but Lakeview would end the drought with another score and two-point conversion attempt to make it 16-14.

With a minute and 33 seconds left, Lakeview returned a Stevenson fumble 80 yards for a touchdown to take a 22-14 lead. As Lakeview attempted the game-deciding field goal to make it a nine-point game, Stevenson blocked the kick to keep the game alive, but there’s a flag on the play courtesy of Stevenson.

With a short two-point conversion attempt, Lakeview took the risk and was denied by the Stevenson defense.

“Our kids never gave up,” Newcomb said.

After falling to Macomb Area Conference-Red rival Romeo on Sept. 9, Stevenson will look to bounce back to .500 as they travel to Macomb Dakota High School on Sept. 16.
