A man who stood outside his broken-down 2004 Cadillac on northbound Interstate 75, south of Crooks Road, just after 6:45 a.m. Nov. 3 died after a tractor/trailer hauling cement powder struck him, police said.

According to a police report, Patrick Seamus Arthurs, 43, of Allen Park, had pulled onto the right shoulder just south of the Crooks Road overpass, got out of his car and was standing next to it. Police said the hood of the car was up, but the car lights and emergency flashers were not activated.

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — A Dakota High School sophomore was killed while walking to school this morning.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office reported that Victoria Cartwright, 14, was hit while crossing Heydenreich Road near Vine Drive, in between 21 and 22 Mile Road, around 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4.

At approximately 2:56 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, police responded to a white 2007 Mercury Milan that had driven through the glass exterior of a Shamrock gas station located on Van Dyke Avenue, north of M-59.

Utica Police Chief David Faber said he feared at first that the incident was the result of a chase or road rage, but he quickly learned that an inexperienced driver went to park in a spot in front of the business, but hit the accelerator instead of the brakes.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — A Hamtramck man died Oct. 11 after crashing his car into a piece of construction equipment on the Shook Road Bridge in Harrison Township, Macomb County sheriff’s officials report.

According to Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, a witness driving past the site at 3:15 a.m. observed the victim’s car lodged under a large piece of equipment on Shook Road just west of Interstate 94.

SOUTHFIELD — More than a year after it began, a construction project on Nine Mile Road has finally wrapped up.

The $2.8 million project is part of a $99 million, citywide infrastructure overhaul that voters approved in 2014. Federal funding provided $1.3 million for the project.

City officials and residents met in the turn lane of the road to celebrate the completion of the project at 10 a.m. Oct. 6.

NEW HAVEN — The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office reports that a 78-year-old Harrison Township man died today after his motorcycle struck an SUV in New Haven.

According to Lt. John Michalke, the incident happened at 11:10 a.m. A 56-year-old New Haven woman was traveling eastbound on New Haven Road and was turning northbound onto Gratiot Avenue when the victim, who was traveling westbound on New Haven Road, struck her 2003 Ford Explorer. He ultimately died from his injuries, officials report.

FRASER/WARREN/ROSEVILLE — A Roseville man has been charged with armed robbery following a police pursuit involving multiple departments.

Kenneth James Ervin, 41, was arraigned Oct. 3, in 39th District Court in Roseville. His bond was set at $250,000 without 10 percent cash or surety.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. Oct. 2 at the Walgreens near 13 Mile Road and Groesbeck Highway in Fraser.

Ervin allegedly walked into the store and approached two female clerks. He allegedly implied he had a gun.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Several were injured in a multi-vehicle crash caused by an alleged drunken driver on Interstate 94 in Harrison Township Sept. 28.

According to a report released by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, a 30-year-old Romulus woman was traveling in a silver 2002 Dodge Durango in the westbound lanes of the highway near N. River Road at around 11:43 p.m. when she reportedly rear-ended another vehicle.

WARREN — Warren police said James Nowak, of St. Clair Shores, died Sept. 27 after the motorcycle he was operating struck a curb around 3:25 p.m. on Hoover Road at Chicago Road.

Detective Sgt. Stephen Mills said Nowak, 54, was travelling southbound on Hoover when he apparently lost control of the 2013 Harley-Davidson and crashed. Nowak was reportedly dead at the scene. 

“He was catapulted in the air. The bike landed on top of him,” Mills said. “He was wearing a helmet. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.”

At approximately 4:23 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, the Shelby Township Police and Fire departments responded to a crash on M-53 between 23 Mile and 24 Mile roads.

The initial investigation found that a red Ford Explorer driven by a 44-year-old Capac man was heading southbound on M-53 when it crossed the center median and struck a white Chevy Malibu driven by a 37-year-old Memphis man.

The 37-year-old man, Scott L. Bajorek, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A portion of eastbound Hall Road in Sterling Heights was temporarily closed Sept. 21 after a four-car crash sent four people to the hospital with injuries — one person’s critical — according to Sterling Heights police.

According to a police report, at around 2:30 p.m. on Hall Road, near Delco Boulevard, a man driving a 2016 Ford F-150 pickup truck reportedly struck the back of a 2015 Buick Encore. The first impact caused a chain of crashes involving a 2007 Pontiac Vibe and a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, police said.

The Michigan State Police Metro Post is investigating a fatal rollover crash on Interstate 696 that ended the life of a 42-year-old Albion, Indiana, man around 10:30 a.m. Sept. 20.

Lt. Calvin Hart confirmed during a recent phone interview that Chad David Thompson was traveling eastbound on I-696, east of Orchard Lake Road, when he may have fallen asleep at the wheel, which caused him to drive onto the road’s right shoulder, lose control, and roll over.

A 66-year-old Troy man died of injuries he sustained in a crash at Stephenson Highway and Maple Road just before 10:30 a.m. Sept. 11.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

Police said Michael Irvin Burke was traveling southbound in a blue 2004 Dodge Neon on Stephenson Highway through the Maple Road intersection when a silver 2009 Chrysler 300 traveling westbound struck his car.

Burke was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Roseville Police Department Traffic Bureau is investigating a fatal crash involving an 80-year-old St. Clair Shores resident who reportedly exited the parking lot of Kroger on 13 Mile Road, between Flora and St. Margaret streets, and collided with a semi-truck at approximately 1 p.m. Aug. 17.

The St. Clair Shores resident was transported to a local hospital where she died shortly after arriving, according to police.

Roseville Deputy Police Chief Donald Glandon stated in a news release that the driver of the semi-truck had no apparent injuries.

A man is dead and a woman is in the hospital following an early morning weekend crash.

According to Lt. Ted Goff, of the Southfield Police Department, police were called at around 6:33 a.m. Aug. 14 to the scene of an accident on southbound Telegraph Road, north of 12 Mile.

Goff said a 65-year-old man from Bloomfield Hills was travelling southbound on Telegraph when he rear-ended a vehicle that was stopped at the traffic signal north of 12 Mile.

The Roseville Police Department is investigating a three-car crash that occurred at about 10 a.m. Aug. 5 on southbound Gratiot at Masonic that has caused southbound Gratiot and eastbound and westbound Masonic to be closed to all traffic, according to a news release sent from Roseville Police Chief James P. Berlin.

Berlin said that the preliminary investigation indicates that a minivan ran a red light and struck a vehicle traveling southbound on Gratiot. That vehicle then swerved and hit a third vehicle.

SOUTHFIELD ― A Michigan State Police Trooper is recovering at a hospital after a recent early morning freeway crash.

According to Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw, the crash occurred around 7 a.m. July 25, when a trooper was called to the area of eastbound Interstate 696 and M-10 on report of a rollover drunk driving crash.

“As the trooper pulled up to the scene, a large state truck hauling construction equipment failed to stop and struck the rear of the patrol car,” Shaw said.
