ROYAL OAK — Police confirmed that a 26-year-old Florida man visiting the city was killed early Feb. 27 after he was hit by a train near the intersection of South Main and Sixth streets.

The Royal Oak Fire Department took Hosam Elghannam to William Beaumont Hospital, where he was pronounced dead following the accident.

MACOMB COUNTY/GROSSE POINTES - Michigan State Police troopers and Macomb County Sheriff deputies were involved in a chase of a reportedly stolen U-Haul truck at approximately 1 a.m. Feb. 24.

Lieutenant John Michalke of the Macomb County Sheriff’s department said the chase began on westbound I-94 at 23 Mile Road, and ended on Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe. Michalke said sheriff’s deputies joined the State Police in the chase on I-94 at Hall Road.

WARREN — A 27-year-old Detroit man was killed early Feb. 1 when the Chevy Malibu he was allegedly driving at a high speed on Toepfer, west of Gratiot smashed into another vehicle, hit a tree and was torn in half.

Detective Sgt. Stephen Mills of the Warren Police Department said the Malibu was heading east on Toepfer just before 4 a.m. when it rear-ended a 2013 Hyundai occupied by two Warren residents.

It wasn’t the first time someone crashed into the Bulk Food Marketplace on Harper Avenue, but Manager Nick Sand said it’s the worst amount of damage.

“It took out quite a bit. She hit the wall, which took out this window and the window on the opposite side,” he said of a crash the afternoon of Jan. 22. He said drivers have crashed into the store on at least four other occasions but usually just take out a window.

WARREN — A 37-year-old Warren man died early Jan. 21 after he was reportedly struck by three vehicles on Schoenherr at Leonard, three blocks north of Toepfer.

Detective Sgt. Stephen Mills of the Warren Police Department said the man was initially struck by a 2009 Kia Sportage driven north on Schoenherr by a 41-year-old Clinton Township woman at 6:57 a.m.

“He was outside of the crosswalk, and it was dark,” Mills said. “She cooperated with the investigation. It doesn’t look like she will even be the at-fault driver.”

METRO DETROIT —  Area police and road crews are warning drivers to take it slow in the ice and snow after reporting nearly 90 crashes during a recent 24-hour time span.

According to Lt. Michael Shaw, public information officer for the Michigan State Police Metro Post — which covers Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties — troopers handled 88 crashes Jan. 12-13.

Shaw said a majority of the crashes reported were single-vehicle spinouts due to driver speed or inattentive driving.

A 48-year-old Roseville woman was struck and killed by a car while crossing 12 Mile Road during the early evening Jan. 12.

According to a police press release, Christine Marie Oleson was trying to cross 12 Mile heading southbound east of Massachusetts Street. She had made it to the lane divider for the two eastbound lanes when a vehicle struck her at 5:45 p.m., police said. The vehicle’s driver, a 61-year-old Roseville man, immediately called 911 and stopped at the scene.

SOUTHFIELD — The intersection of Telegraph and 12 Mile was recently named by the Traffic Improvement Association of Michigan as crash-prone, but local law enforcement officials attribute the statistic to high traffic volumes.

According to data compiled by the TIA for 2015, Telegraph and 12 Mile was ranked second in Oakland County for having the most crashes with 93. The M-5 highway at Pontiac Trail in Commerce Township ranked first with 114 crashes.

A 91-year-old Troy man is expected to recover from injuries he sustained in a car crash on Dequindre Road, just south of Long Lake Road, before 2:30 p.m. Jan. 11.

Police said the man intended to pull into a gas station and turned left in front of oncoming southbound traffic on Dequindre.

According to Troy Police Capt. Bob Redmond, the man was not wearing a seat belt and struck his head on the pillar of the window of his 1998 four-door Mazda.
