MACOMB TOWNSHIP — At press time, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a single-car crash that occurred around 1 a.m. April 11 near the corner of Porta Marina Drive and Sanborn Drive.

Upon arriving, deputies reportedly found that a 2016 Ford Explorer had crashed and was on its side in the driveway of a home located in the 16800 block of Porta Marina Drive, which is in a residential area east of Garfield Road between 21 Mile Road and 22 Mile Road.

There were two occupants still inside the vehicle when deputies arrived.

MACOMB COUNTY — Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies have stepped up patrols as part of a six-day enforcement campaign targeting distracted drivers.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said his office will be adding patrols around the county April 8-13 as they look to keep distracted drivers off the roads; specifically those texting while driving.

Wickersham said the additional patrols are being made possible through a grant by the Office of Highway Safety Planning.

SOUTHFIELD — The Michigan State Police is investigating the cause of a recent fatal freeway crash.

According to a news release from Lt. Calvin Hart, first platoon commander at the MSP, around 10:44 p.m. Tuesday, troopers were dispatched to a traffic crash in the left lanes of westbound I-696 between Greenfield Road and Southfield Road.

When police arrived on scene, they determined a man in his 30s who was driving a Ford Fusion lost control of his vehicle and struck the rear of a maintenance vehicle contracted by Oakland County.

SOUTHFIELD — Authorities are on the lookout for the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal hit and run in February.

Deputy Chief Nick Loussia said previously in a news release that at around 2:50 a.m. Feb. 23, a woman was walking on westbound Eight Mile Road, between Southfield and Evergreen roads, when she was struck and killed by a vehicle.

After striking the woman, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene southbound on Evergreen Road, south of Eight Mile.

Previously, police did not know the make or model of the vehicle involved in the crash.

A local man suffered no injuries from being struck by a vehicle while attempting to assist at the scene of a traffic crash recently.

Around 8:40 p.m. March 28, Michigan State Police Detroit Regional Dispatch began receiving calls about a multiple-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate-696, west of Greenfield Road, police said. 

According to a news release from Lt. Michael Shaw, of the Michigan State Police, during a preliminary investigation officers discovered that there was a two-car crash blocking the left lane of the freeway.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Yet another bridge closure in Harrison Township is creating travel headaches for local motorists.

The Jefferson Avenue bridge over the Clinton River spillway between Shook and Crocker was closed to traffic on March 23.

According to Macomb County Department of Roads Director Bob Hoepfner, the closure is another part of ongoing efforts to repair the township’s aged and deteriorating bridges.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — A Chesterfield Township woman was charged with operating while intoxicated second offense and operating while intoxicated causing death hours after her passenger died following a single-vehicle crash early in the morning hours March 24 on Interstate 94.

Ceara Amme Abbott, 20, was allegedly behind the wheel of a 2001 Ford F-150 when officials from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said a physical fight erupted between her two female passengers.

Michigan State Police are investigating a crash that shut down Interstate 94 during the afternoon of March 18.

Troopers were sent to eastbound I-94 just east of 11 Mile Road around 12:30 p.m. that day, where the driver told them that road debris went through the windshield and injured the passenger. He also told police that he and the passenger had just purchased heroin in Detroit.

ROSEVILLE — A 14-year-old Roseville teenager is in stable condition after being hit by a car near Common and Glenhurst March 9.

According to Roseville Police Chief James Berlin, the student was leaving Roseville High School when he stepped out in front of an oncoming car on Common, getting hit in the process. The student was transferred to a hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries,” Berlin said, and was in stable condition later that day.

Police said weather was a contributing factor in a serious car crash on Wednesday that closed Rochester Road for about three hours during the morning commute.

Police said a 26-year-old Royal Oak man was transported to William Beaumont Hospital at 7:35 a.m. March 2 following the traffic accident on Rochester Road near Houstonia Avenue.

According to police, the driver was the only person in the car, and he suffered “serious” injuries.

ROYAL OAK — Police confirmed that a 26-year-old Florida man visiting the city was killed early Feb. 27 after he was hit by a train near the intersection of South Main and Sixth streets.

The Royal Oak Fire Department took Hosam Elghannam to William Beaumont Hospital, where he was pronounced dead following the accident.

MACOMB COUNTY/GROSSE POINTES - Michigan State Police troopers and Macomb County Sheriff deputies were involved in a chase of a reportedly stolen U-Haul truck at approximately 1 a.m. Feb. 24.

Lieutenant John Michalke of the Macomb County Sheriff’s department said the chase began on westbound I-94 at 23 Mile Road, and ended on Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe. Michalke said sheriff’s deputies joined the State Police in the chase on I-94 at Hall Road.

WARREN — A 27-year-old Detroit man was killed early Feb. 1 when the Chevy Malibu he was allegedly driving at a high speed on Toepfer, west of Gratiot smashed into another vehicle, hit a tree and was torn in half.

Detective Sgt. Stephen Mills of the Warren Police Department said the Malibu was heading east on Toepfer just before 4 a.m. when it rear-ended a 2013 Hyundai occupied by two Warren residents.

It wasn’t the first time someone crashed into the Bulk Food Marketplace on Harper Avenue, but Manager Nick Sand said it’s the worst amount of damage.

“It took out quite a bit. She hit the wall, which took out this window and the window on the opposite side,” he said of a crash the afternoon of Jan. 22. He said drivers have crashed into the store on at least four other occasions but usually just take out a window.

WARREN — A 37-year-old Warren man died early Jan. 21 after he was reportedly struck by three vehicles on Schoenherr at Leonard, three blocks north of Toepfer.

Detective Sgt. Stephen Mills of the Warren Police Department said the man was initially struck by a 2009 Kia Sportage driven north on Schoenherr by a 41-year-old Clinton Township woman at 6:57 a.m.

“He was outside of the crosswalk, and it was dark,” Mills said. “She cooperated with the investigation. It doesn’t look like she will even be the at-fault driver.”

METRO DETROIT —  Area police and road crews are warning drivers to take it slow in the ice and snow after reporting nearly 90 crashes during a recent 24-hour time span.

According to Lt. Michael Shaw, public information officer for the Michigan State Police Metro Post — which covers Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties — troopers handled 88 crashes Jan. 12-13.

Shaw said a majority of the crashes reported were single-vehicle spinouts due to driver speed or inattentive driving.

A 48-year-old Roseville woman was struck and killed by a car while crossing 12 Mile Road during the early evening Jan. 12.

According to a police press release, Christine Marie Oleson was trying to cross 12 Mile heading southbound east of Massachusetts Street. She had made it to the lane divider for the two eastbound lanes when a vehicle struck her at 5:45 p.m., police said. The vehicle’s driver, a 61-year-old Roseville man, immediately called 911 and stopped at the scene.

SOUTHFIELD — The intersection of Telegraph and 12 Mile was recently named by the Traffic Improvement Association of Michigan as crash-prone, but local law enforcement officials attribute the statistic to high traffic volumes.

According to data compiled by the TIA for 2015, Telegraph and 12 Mile was ranked second in Oakland County for having the most crashes with 93. The M-5 highway at Pontiac Trail in Commerce Township ranked first with 114 crashes.

A 91-year-old Troy man is expected to recover from injuries he sustained in a car crash on Dequindre Road, just south of Long Lake Road, before 2:30 p.m. Jan. 11.

Police said the man intended to pull into a gas station and turned left in front of oncoming southbound traffic on Dequindre.

According to Troy Police Capt. Bob Redmond, the man was not wearing a seat belt and struck his head on the pillar of the window of his 1998 four-door Mazda.
