Mayor’s Big Rake event needs volunteers
SOUTHFIELD — The eighth annual Mayor’s Big Rake is set to take place 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays Nov. 11 and 18, and Dec. 2.
The Big Rake partners with Mayor Kenson Siver, Southfield Great Lakes Ace Hardware, Home Depot and Lowe’s of Southfield to help senior or disabled Southfield residents with fall lawn maintenance. Paper yard bags have been donated by the hardware stores partnering with the Mayor’s Office.
Siver has donated 80 rakes, which will be provided to the volunteers. In the fall of 2022, 250 volunteers helped to clear 75 yards in five days. Those interested in volunteering can contact the Mayor’s Office at (248) 796-5100 or email vperry@cityofsouthfield.com.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves. Senior or disabled residents who would like to sign up to get their leaves raked can contact the Mayor’s Office at (248) 796-5100. Other dates and times may be scheduled if there is a demand for it and there are enough volunteers to assist in more cleanups.
Southfield Police Department to host trunk or treat
SOUTHFIELD — The Southfield Police Department will host a Trunk or Treat event inside the Southfield Pavilion 1-4 p.m. Oct. 29.
The event will grant children the exciting opportunity to trunk or treat out of a variety of police vehicles. In addition, children will get a closer look at the police vehicles, and parents will receive important safety information. There will also be more Halloween-themed fun, games, crafts and giveaways. Oakland County Health Department, Southfield Fire Department to host community flu vaccine clinic
SOUTHFIELD — The Southfield Fire Department and the Oakland County Health Department will host a Community Flu Vaccine Clinic 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Southfield Pavilion, 26000 Evergreen Road.
Most health insurance plans will cover the cost of the flu shots. For those without insurance, the flu shots cost $25 each and senior flu shots cost $68. Payment will be accepted by cash, credit and debit cards.
Service will not be denied for those with an inability to pay, and a discounted/sliding fee schedule will be available.

ADL Michigan Walk Against Hate to take place in Southfield
SOUTHFIELD — The Anti-Defamation League’s 2-mile Walk Against Hate will take place 1 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Southfield City Centre, 26000 Evergreen Road. The first Walk Against Hate took place in Philadelphia in 2011. Since then, ADL’s Walk Against Hate has grown to a national walk that unites participants all across the U.S. in solidarity to end antisemitism, bigotry and all forms of hate, the group said. All participants must register to participate; however, there is no fee for registration. Donations of any amount are encouraged to support ADL’s work in Michigan’s communities. People who raise $18 or more will earn a T-shirt. Preregistration can be accessed at walkagainsthate.org/michigan.
LTU to host 10th annual Regional Stormwater Summit
SOUTHFIELD — In partnership with the office of Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash, the nonprofit organization Pure Oakland Water and Lawrence Technological University, the Annual Regional Stormwater Summit will be held 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 20 at Lawrence Technological University, 21000 W 10 Mile Road.
The event is a southeast Michigan regional gathering of government, industry and community stakeholders interested in learning and sharing the latest technologies, new rules, and collaborative efforts around stormwater management issues.
LTU President Tarek M. Sobh will deliver the opening remarks, followed by a presentation by Shavion Scott, managing director of urban resilience at the Center for Neighborhood Technologies in Chicago, who will speak on her organization’s work in “equitable, green stormwater infrastructure.” Other speakers include Donald Carpenter, principal at the environmental engineering firm Drummond Carpenter and director of the LTU Great Lakes Stormwater Management Institute; Jim Luke, outreach coordinator of the Detroit District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Conor Keitzer of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Justice; Lynne Seymour and Stephanie Petriello of the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office environmental team; Katie Grantham, planner at the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments; and Paul Gross, WDIV Channel 4 meteorologist emeritus.
