Winter sports set to take center stage

METRO DETROIT — The fall sports season comes to a close in a couple of weeks, which means the winter season will be in full swing before you know it.

We still have the football, volleyball and girls swimming state finals to come, but the eight winter sports begin shortly.

Following is a breakdown of all the winter sports, including their start dates, playoff start dates, and state finals dates and locations.

Practices for all the winter sports have begun, with the exception of boys basketball, bowling, skiing and wrestling (all Nov. 18), and boys swimming (Nov. 25).

Basketball
Girls basketball teams across the state will hit the court for the first of 20 games Dec. 2. The girls basketball state playoffs start March 2. The state finals take place March 19-21 at Michigan State University.

The 20-game boys basketball season begins with first games scheduled for Dec. 9. The boys basketball state playoffs begin March 9, and the state finals are set for March 26-28 at MSU.

Bowling
Bowling teams all over the state will hit the lanes for 24 regular-season matchups beginning Dec. 7. Regionals are set for Feb. 28-29. The bowling state finals are set for March 6-7 at various sites.

Competitive cheer
Cheerleading teams will begin their 12-meet regular season starting Nov. 25. District meets are set for Feb. 21-22, and regionals take place Feb. 29. The state finals are set for March 6-7 in Grand Rapids.

Gymnastics
Gymnastics season begins Nov. 16 with teams slated to compete in 15 regular-season contests. Regionals take place March 7. The state finals are set for March 13-14 at Rockford High.

Ice hockey
Prep ice hockey teams begin the season Nov. 18 and will play 25 regular-season games. Regionals are set for Feb. 24 to March 4. State quarterfinals take place March 7, with the state semifinals and finals set for March 12-14 at the USA Ice Hockey Arena in Plymouth.

Skiing
Boys and girls skiing season begins Dec. 14 with teams competing in 17 regular-season contests. Regionals take place Feb. 10-14. The state finals are set for Feb. 24 at sites to be determined.

Boys swimming
The boys swimming season begins Dec. 7 with teams participating in 17 regular-season meets. Dive regionals are set for March 5. The state finals take place March 13-14 at various sites.

Wrestling
Wrestling season begins Dec. 11 with teams competing in 14 regular-season contests. The team wrestling playoffs begin Feb. 12, while the individual playoffs start Feb. 15.

Team and individual regionals take place Feb. 19 and Feb. 22, respectively. The team state finals take place Feb. 28-29 in Kalamazoo. The Individual finals take place March 6-7 at Ford Field in Detroit.
