TROY — West Bloomfield High football stands alone at the top of the Oakland Activities Association Red Division standings.

The Lakers beat Troy Athens 28-17 Sept. 18 on the road.

“We knew the winner of this game was in sole possession of first place, and we wanted to establish ourselves,” West Bloomfield coach Ron Bellamy said.

Athens had its chances. Late in the third quarter, trailing 14-9, the Red Hawks were first-and-goal from the West Bloomfield 2-yard line, but a penalty and two sacks pushed the offense all the way back to the 25-yard line and the squad came up empty handed.

“We had our backs against the wall. We preach every day in practice, ‘never let up,’” Bellamy said.

West Bloomfield responded on the following possession, going 80 yards in 13 plays, capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Trishton Jackson to Gervon Winn to make it a two-score game.

West Bloomfield’s defense accounted for nine sacks and kept Athens to 41 yards rushing.

“We played hard. They’re a very good team with a lot of speed. I think that caught our offensive line off guard a little bit,” Athens coach Josh Heppner said. "I think this is one of the best teams we're going to face, and it's going to make us better in the long run."

After recovering a fumble on Athens’ first possession of the game, West Bloomfield opened the scoring when Davion Johnson rumbled for 36 yards less than two minutes into the game to make it 7-0.

Athens cut it to 7-3 after a 32-yard field goal by Zack Ayotte with 4:16 left in the first.

After stopping West Bloomfield on downs, the Red Hawks took their only lead when Joey Stark hit Jake Vincent on a 14-yard post. West Bloomfield blocked the extra point try and trailed 9-7 with 9:24 left in the half.

A minute later, the Lakers went back on top after Brandon Williams came in at quarterback and found Jackson on an 8-yard fade to make it 14-9.

Jackson saw time at receiver and quarterback. He put the game away with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Johnson with 6:09 left in the contest. Jackson finished with 117 yards passing, three total touchdowns and 38 yards rushing.

Athens scored on its final possession after Stark hit Brendan Genereau for an 11-yard score with 41 seconds remaining. Stark totaled 129 yards and two scores with two interceptions.

The Red Hawks fall to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Red. Up next is Bloomfield Hills High at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at home.

West Bloomfield stays unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Red. The Lakers look to stay perfect against when they host Lake Orion High at 7 p.m. Sept. 25.
