TROY — It was a goal of the Sterling Heights Stevenson volleyball team to get back to a regional final after falling to Grosse Pointe North at that point last season.

The Titans accomplished that goal, beating Troy Athens 3-0 in a Class A regional semifinal Nov. 8 at Troy High.

Stevenson (41-6-2) advances to take on either Grosse Pointe North or Birmingham Marian in a regional final set for 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at Troy High.

"This is what we've been playing for all year," Titans coach Paul Drdul said. "To see the girls come out and play how they did let's me know they really want (a regional championship)."

Stevenson led each game start to finish. The Titans won Game 1 25-10. The Red Hawks (16-5-1) were within one early at 3-2.

Stevenson jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in Game 2 and won 25-11. The Titans won Game 3 25-9.

"We were a little worried we'd be out of our routine today since we didn't have school," Drdul said. "It was good to see the girls come out ready to play."

Athens advanced to regionals for the second straight year. The Red Hawks won the Oakland Activities Association White Division crown and a district title this fall.

"This just wasn't our night," Athens coach Christine Stanichuk said. "But our girls have no reason to hold their heads down. We had an awesome year. We were a win away tonight from getting further than any team in Athens history. I'm proud of those girls and how they battled all year."

Stevenson beat Utica Ford II 3-0 Nov. 4 to advance to regionals.

Athens beat Warren Cousino 3-1 Nov. 4 to get to the regional round.

The Titans haven't dropped a game so far in the playoffs.
