ST. CLAIR SHORES — Believe it or not, the baseball and softball playoffs are less than two weeks away.

Some squads will play pre-district games May 28, with the majority of district round matchups taking place May 31 and June 1.

That includes the baseball and softball teams from St. Clair Shores Lake Shore, Lakeview and South Lake.

The Shorians and Huskies baseball teams will play in a Division 1 district hosted by Fraser High. The bracket also includes Roseville High and Fraser. Matchups were not set at press time. The winner of the Fraser district moves on to a 4 p.m. June 5 regional semifinal at New Baltimore Anchor Bay.

South Lake will play in a D-2 district hosted by Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy. The field also includes Detroit Denby, Detroit Osborn, Harper Woods High and the host. Matchups were not set at press time. The winner advances to a regional semifinal set for June 5 at Chandler Park.

Lakeview coach Scott McGregor said advancing to the regional round is one of the goals the team set this season.

“As long as we compete as one team, the wins will come,” McGregor said. “This team has two major goals: a (division) and district title. Both are within reach, and accomplishing both will absolutely surpass the last few years of success.”

Lake Shore and Lakeview will play in a D-1 district May 31 hosted by Fraser.

Lakeview and Roseville meet in a semifinal at 9:30 a.m. Lake Shore and Fraser square off at 11:30 a.m. The district final is slated for 1:30 p.m. The winner goes to a regional semifinal set for noon June 8 at Utica Ford II.

Lake Shore coach Will Puvalowski — who led the team to district titles in 2014 and 2017 — is hopeful that the team can make a push for a third district championship in six seasons.

“I think the No. 1 thing that would have to happen is for the team to stay healthy and continue to become closer as a group,” Puvalowski said. “I think our district is very competitive, and it is one that I believe any of the four teams could win.”

South Lake will play in a D-2 district hosted by Harper Woods High. The field includes Detroit Denby, Detroit Osborn, Harper Woods and Chandler Park. Matchups were not set at press time. The winner advances to a regional semifinal set for June 8 at Livonia Clarenceville.

South Lake coach Dave Ahearn — who has led the team to district titles in four of the last five seasons — said his team is young, but that all of the team’s players have stepped up at various points this season, and he hopes that carries over into the postseason.

“Hopefully that means that as the end of May rolls around ... we’re really hitting our stride as we enter the state playoffs,” Ahearn said.

The state semifinals and finals for both baseball and softball take place June 13-15 at Michigan State University.
