Rochester Adams saw its postseason run halted one step short of a trip to states, as the Highlanders fell to Oxford 40-24 in an MHSAA Division 1 regional final on Wednesday night.

Adams held a 15-13 lead after seven weight classes, but Oxford took the next four matches — two by pin, one by technical fall and another by major decision — to clinch the victory. It's Oxford's eighth regional title in nine years.

"This one, we were so balanced with Adams, and for the first time in a long time, we had to think about coaching moves with who they were going to put out and how we were going to match up," Oxford coach Paul McDevitt said.

Keyed by Ethan Kerin's pinfall victory at 152 pounds, Oxford opened up a 13-3 lead after four matches.

Adams responded with three consecutive wins to take a 15-13 lead. Jon Buchanan (160 pounds) won by a 10-8 decision in overtime; Sam Addy (171) won with a first-round pin; and Adam Davenport (189) won by a 9-4 decision.

“I’m proud of the boys. I was telling them I’d rather be in the trenches, and have this experience and have this feeling. It hurts and stings, but I’d rather have this whole experience of coming up a little short, then never having it at all," Adams coach Mike Holtz said.

After Oxford went ahead 34-15 with three matches left, Dylan Howcroft (119) defeated his opponent by way of an 8-5 decision. Jake Anderson rounded out the scoring for Adams with a first-round pinfall win at 125 pounds.

In the semifinal matches, Adams defeated Troy 62-9, while Oxford knocked off Sterling Heights Stevenson 62-10.

Adams closes its season at 23-7. Oxford (20-7) advances to the state quarterfinals, which will be held on Feb. 27 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
