WARREN — Warren Regina senior Betsy Lueck has years of soccer under her belt.

In February, she signed to play at the University of Toledo, and she believes her hard work has paid off.

“I’m very excited,” said Lueck, who is a midfielder for the Nationals of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, based in Pontiac. “This is an opportunity most kids don’t have. I’m extremely grateful. I’m really looking forward to getting started. I’ve been working for this my whole life.”

Lueck, a Mount Clemens resident, looked at a number of schools in the Mid-American Conference. Lueck also considered Cincinnati’s Xavier University and TCU in Dallas-Fort Worth.

She chose Toledo in part out of a visit. Lueck said she thought the campus was beautiful when she visited last spring.

“And it was a one-on-one visit, so I felt like they gave me more time than some of the other schools,” said Lueck, who is a member of Regina’s student council and the National Honor Society. “I figured I didn’t want to go to a huge school like a Big Ten school.

“At Toledo, I loved the coaches and the team. I could see myself being there.”

Playing for the Nationals helped Lueck raise her profile. Teams and players in the developmental academy play year-round in games and tournaments all over the Midwest, along with some competitions in Florida and California.

The teams practice four days a week, Lueck said. Every player in the league is bound for college. Lueck did play for the Saddlelites for three years, and also was a four-year player on Regina’s basketball team.

Lueck is a three-time All-State selection as a midfielder. She’ll play more of a defensive position for Toledo. Lueck said she’s working hard to prepare herself for the rigors of college soccer.

“I’m training and lifting weights, and working to get faster,” Lueck said. “I’m really looking forward to being with the team. It feels like a family. I think this is going to be an amazing opportunity.”
