Last shot.

That’s what Week 9 represents for several prep football teams across the state as they look to secure trips to the postseason.

Naturally, that includes teams from Macomb County and the Macomb Area Conference. Several county teams have already locked up playoff spots, but others must seal the deal in Week 9 to continue their season.

Eight Macomb County or MAC teams in the C & G coverage area have won six games and locked up playoff spots with one week left in the regular season. Nine others need one more win to ensure themselves of a postseason berth. Five other teams sit at 4-4 and must win this weekend to have a chance at the playoffs.

According to the MHSAA, for football, postseason inclusion is determined by wins and a computer point value, calculated for each team based upon its record and strength of schedule, with the top 256 teams (including all teams with six victories if playing a nine-game schedule) qualifying. These 256 teams are then ordered by enrollment and divided into eight divisions of 32 teams each. That means there are teams that could qualify for the postseason with 5-4 records if they played a strong schedule.

Here is this season’s final weekly installment of the C & G Sports MAC and Macomb County football playoff picture. Each week, we will give you a snapshot of which local squads are in line for postseason berths. This week, we begin with the eight locks.

Check back Oct. 25 for a rundown of which teams from our coverage area qualified for the state playoffs, which begin Oct. 30.
