CLINTON TOWNSHIP — In all, just 19 total points were scored, and in the end, just five separated the Clinton Township Clintondale and the Port Huron High football teams in 2010.

Having seen his team play three games in 2011, and knowing what he does about the current squad at Port Huron, Dave Schindler expects a very similar game at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 when the two teams meet for the second fall in a row.

“They have some good athletes, some big, strong kids,” Schindler said of Port Huron. “It’s going to be tough. It’s going to be a very physical battle.”

Just like last year, when the Big Reds edged Clintondale 12-7.

That game, though, didn’t have the hype this year’s will.

When the teams met in week five of the 2010 season, Clintondale was fresh off a narrow win against Madison Heights Lamphere and had just a 2-2 record, while Port Huron was riding a two-game losing streak and was 1-3.

Through three weeks this year, both teams were a perfect 3-0.

“The defense is getting 11 guys to the ball, and that’s been key for us,” Schindler said. Clintondale had allowed just 14 points total this year in three games. “They are flying around and doing their job. That’s been the difference.”

He knows his guys will be tested against a Port Huron offense that is averaging more than 34 points a game, though.

“It’s not going to be easy, by any means,” Schindler said with a laugh. “We’re a young group still learning on the fly, but it’s a confident group. We’re going to battle.”
