GROSSE POINTE FARMS/WOODS — This year’s team wrestling finals are scheduled to take place at the McGuirk Arena on the campus of Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant.

For teams around the state, the journey toward the ultimate goal of making a trip up north begins in the district round of the postseason.

Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South are two of the local teams that will get their chance at making some postseason memories, as South will host a Division 1 district tournament Feb. 11. Joining the host Blue Devils and North in the district are Eastpointe East Detroit and St. Clair Shores Lakeview.

South has won two consecutive district championships, beating North at some point along the way on both occasions.

North’s last district championship came in 2013, and in that tournament, it was the Norsemen coming away with a win against their crosstown rival.

While North head coach Eric Julien said his team is wrestling really tough heading into the tournament, the results from the last couple of years have not completely escaped his attention.

“I expect to win every single year,” said Julien, who is in his fifth season as North’s head coach. “Last couple years we got upset. The past two years, we’ve lost to Grosse Pointe South — earlier in the year had beat them both times by a hefty margin. The goal every single year is to win.”

Julien’s experience as North’s coach has taught him that come postseason time, his team is ready to go.

“Especially with us being in the same district as Grosse Pointe South,” he said. “It’s really easy to motivate the kids to compete with those guys. When they see that trophy being held up last year by Grosse Pointe South, they weren’t very thrilled.

“I have nine freshmen and sophomores who start on my varsity roster. They’re stepping up really nice towards the end of the season. I have a couple kids who are injured, and some younger guys are stepping in their place. It’ll be really nice to see when the end of the season comes around if these younger guys can get the job done. South’s got a bunch of older guys. Lakeview’s got a really nice team going right now also. It’ll be nice to see if they can step up.”

The other teams scheduled to compete in the tournament are Eastpointe East Detroit and St. Clair Shores Lakeview. The South district winner advances to team regionals, hosted by Fraser High Feb. 17.

This season’s individual districts are scheduled to take place at New Baltimore Anchor Bay.
