Team name: Macomb Lutheran North Mustangs
Last season’s record: 3-6
League: Catholic High School League Intersectional I
Returning starters: 7
First game: 7 p.m. Aug. 24 vs. Livonia Clarenceville

Offensive keys:
First-year Mustangs coach Garrett Wenzelburger, who served as an assistant with the program the previous two seasons, said he’d like to base the team’s attack around its run game.

“We have a good quarterback (junior Angelo Basilisco), though, and we trust him,” Wenzelburger said. “This is his first year starting and he’s a bit inexperienced, but from what I’ve seen from (him) in the summer, I’m really impressed.”

Senior running back Jake Mlynarek will lead the rushing attack. Senior kicker Jackson Griskie will be asked to make plays as well.

Last season, the Mustangs put up 27.8 points per game.

Defensive keys:
Senior defensive backs Steele Butzin and Alec Vandermeer, senior defensive lineman Shayne Erni, and Mlynarek (linebacker) will anchor the defense.

Last season, North allowed 31.4 points per game.

Special teams will also be vital for North, Wenzelburger said. He noted that Griskie can flip the field and is great at onside kicks.

Coach’s outlook:
“The team is maybe a little young and inexperienced like its coach,” Wenzelburger said. “We need to take it one game at a time. I’m an optimist. I believe we can always win any game we go out there and play. The biggest thing is just getting them to play a high level of football every day in practice and games.”
