Local teams take part in tennis and golf regionals

GROSSE POINTES — Girls golf and boys tennis regionals have concluded, with programs either continuing their season at the state finals or finishing up the year.

In girls golf action, Grosse Pointe South dominated its Division 1 regional Oct. 7 at Fox Creek Golf Course. The Blue Devils shot a team score of 335. The next closest team shot a 370.

Audrey Becker paced the Blue Devils with an 80, Kaitlin Ifkovits added an 83, Sabel Imesch posted an 85, Mia Rancilio scored an 87 and Alston Smith put up a 94.

The Blue Devils will now play in the state finals Oct. 18-19 at Forest Akers West at Michigan State University.

Grosse Pointe North took part in a D-2 regional tournament Oct. 10 at Farmington Hills Golf Club, but the Norsemen were unable to advance to states. North shot 440 as a team to finish eighth. The top three teams in each regional and the top three individuals on nonqualifying teams earn a spot in the state final fields.

In boys tennis action, Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett advanced to the D-4 state finals, which will take place Oct. 18-19 at Hope College.

No. 4 singles player Gerry Sherer, No. 1 doubles pair Vince Maribao and Jacob Tomlinson, No. 3 doubles pair Alex Deimel and Rocco Scarfone, and No. 4 doubles pair Bode Neumeister and Tarun Jarial won flight championships.

North and South also advanced to the tennis state finals. The Blue Devils will play in the D-1 finals, which take place at Midland Tennis Center, while the Norsemen will play in the D-2 finals at the University of Michigan. Both will be Oct. 18-19.

The Norsemen didn’t have any flight champions in the regional, but did have six flight runners-up.

The Blue Devils had No. 3 singles player Blake Discher and No. 2 doubles pair Will White and Jackson Marchal win flight championships, while also having three flight runners-up.
