GROSSE POINTES — Grosse Pointe North’s girls soccer team concluded its season with a 5-0 loss to Troy High in a Division 1 regional final June 7 at Troy Athens.

North finished with an overall record of 15-8-1 and 6-3-1 in the Macomb Area Conference White Division.

It was the first time North had advanced to a regional final since 2008.

“I think we had a really nice season,” assistant coach Eric Vanston said following the regional final. “Today didn’t go our way, so it was a tough ending, but we have a lot of things to be proud of. We had a good run in the league, and we won a district title. So I’m very pleased with the season.”

The seniors who made up North’s roster were Katie Link, Victoria Alvarez, Chloe Redeye, Alyssa Dall, Greta DeLoach, Lauren Sickmiller and Eva Ciaramitaro.

“It’s tough when the season ends,” Vanston said. “For the seniors, they move on to bigger and better things. We’ll miss (them).”

Following the game, Vanston gave some thought as to how this season could benefit North moving forward.

“We were in a regional final for the first time in a long time,” Vanston said. “So I hope tasting that success is something that leads to bigger and better things.”

North beat New Baltimore Anchor Bay via a 1-0 shootout in a regional semifinal June 5.

Also locally, Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett’s girls soccer team beat Genesee Christian 3-0 to win a D-4 regional championship June 8 at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.

Liggett was scheduled to play Lansing Christian in a semifinal June 12, after press time.

The winner of that game will have an opportunity to compete for a state championship at 1 p.m. June 15 at Williamston High.

Garden City High beat South 7-5 in a D-1 regional semifinal June 9 at North.

Liggett’s season came to an end with an 11-10 D-4 regional semifinal loss to Allen Park Inter-City Baptist June 9 at home.

“They’ve come such a long, long way,” Liggett coach Pam Savich said of her team following the game. “Things have just progressed and progressed. And so that’s almost the reason that it’s a little bit more heartbreaking than anything for this season to end. They fought their heart out.”

Maddison Hamilton and Sabrina Malkoun completed their senior seasons.

“They are such outstanding people; such outstanding softball players,” Savich said.
