The second round of the playoffs is upon us and there are some more intriguing matchups. Following is a list of a few key matchups from the C & G Sports coverage area.

Another regional run?

University of Detroit Jesuit (7-3) vs. Farmington High (8-1) –– 7 p.m. Nov. 8

The Cubs knocked off North Farmington in the opening round, while the Falcons stunned a highly ranked Oak Park High program. These two programs have played just one time prior to this matchup, with Jesuit claiming a win in the 1999 playoffs. Farmington’s defense has been its calling card, and the Falcons will rely on that unit again to advance to a second consecutive regional final.

Stout defenses battle

Plymouth High (9-1) vs. West Bloomfield High (9-1) –– 7 p.m. Nov. 8

The Lakers dismantled Canton High in the opening round of the playoffs, while Plymouth got by White Lake Lakeland. Both teams enter the contest with stout defensive units, so offense could be hard to come by in this one. Both teams have allowed opponents to score more than 20 points just twice this season. With a trip to the regional final on the line, expect this one to be tight.

Powerful offenses collide

Fenton High (9-1) vs. Walled Lake Western (9-1) –– 7 p.m. Nov. 8

Walled Lake Western is 3-0 all-time against Fenton and will look to keep that undefeated mark when the teams meet Friday night. Both teams enter having scored more than 380 total points in 10 games this season, so whichever defense steps up could determine a winner. Western downed Flushing in the first round, while Fenton inched by South Lyon High. Western defeated Fenton in the opening round of the playoffs last season.
