CANTON — Farmington Hills Mercy won a Division 1 Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League state championship with a 3-2 victory against Grosse Pointe South March 12 at Arctic Edge.

Mercy moved to Division 1 after winning a Division 2 state title last season.

Although South had the puck in Mercy’s zone multiple times in the remaining moments of play, goalie Caitlin Somerville and the Marlins’ defense prevented what would have been the game-tying goal.

“Unbelievable feeling,” Mercy coach Valerie Sosnowski said following the game. “We worked extremely hard to get to this point. Every single one of those girls in the locker room deserves this. We got a group of girls that love each other and look out for each other on the ice. All year long they’ve worked hard for this.”

South took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Maria Di Cresce before Mercy’s Emily McCann scored later in the period to even things up.

Mercy took its first lead of the game on a goal by Makena Duval in the second. Di Cresce scored her second goal of the game to tie the score at 2-2 later in the period.

Mercy junior Sophie Van Acker delivered what turned out to be the game-winning goal with 3:30 remaining in the second.

Somerville, who is in her senior season, ends her high school career with a state championship.

“I didn’t expect coming in my freshman year to be winning a D-1 title my senior year,” she said. “It’s pretty awesome. I’m just so happy to have played with these people. Win or lose, I’m just glad I had this team.”

Mercy also beat South the two times the teams met during the regular season.
