FRASER — The Macomb Dakota wrestling team ran its consecutive district title streak to three in a 37-33 win over Fraser High in a Division 1 Feb. 11 at Fraser.

The bout came down to the last match. Down 33-31, Dakota sent out senior 145-pounder Jacob Patterson knowing he needed points for his team to advance. Patterson obliged, scoring a pin 34 seconds into the first round to give his team a 37-33 victory.

"I felt pretty confident sending (Patterson) out there," Dakota coach Ed Skowneski said. "He's a senior. He's one of our leaders, and I knew he could get it done."

The district final was close throughout. The biggest gap came with Dakota up 27-21 after nine matches. The district final was hard hitting, too, as nine of 14 matches ended in pins.

"We expected tonight to be tough," said Skowneski, whose team downed Roseville High 48-24 to get to the district final. "Fraser and Roseville have great programs, so we came in ready for some battles."

Dakota advances to take on Warren De La Salle in a regional quarterfinal set for 6 p.m. Feb. 18 at Roseville. De La Salle downed Sterling Heights High 66-15 to win its third straight district championship.

Fraser downed Clinton Township Chippewa Valley 36-27 to reach the district final. Fraser battled out of a 21-3 hole in the win.

"We wrestled tough. There were some really good matches. I take my hat off to Dakota," Fraser coach Rick Julien said.

Dakota upended Fraser in a regional final last season.
