MACOMB TOWNSHIP — The Macomb Dakota swim and dive team put in a dominant performance in winning the 2020 Macomb County championship Feb. 8 at Macomb L’Anse Creuse North.

The Cougars won seven of 12 events and tallied 397 points. Dakota scored 106 more points than second-place Clinton Township Chippewa Valley.

The Cougars’ win ends a seven-year run of county titles for Warren De La Salle. Dakota finished second behind the Pilots at the 2019 county meet.

“Our goal every year (at the county meet) is to swim fast and compete to the best of our abilities,” Cougars coach David Smith said. “It’s an opportunity to swim against the best swimmers in the county.

“We were able to meet these goals while having fun doing it. The fact that we won is icing on the cake, especially because we’ve been runner-up the past few years.”

Dakota senior Zach Colo earned Senior Swimmer of the Meet honors, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle (48.73 seconds) and helping the Cougars to wins in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Colo also finished second in the 200 freestyle.

Dakota’s Alex Duhaime took home county titles in the 200 individual medley (1:56.89) and 100 breaststroke (59.84 seconds). Duhaime also was a part of the Cougars’ 400 freestyle relay win.

Dakota’s Auston Shafer on the day won the 50 freestyle (22 seconds) and 100 butterfly (53.80), along with helping the Cougars win the 400 freestyle relay.

“I have a group of talented swimmers who train year-round,” Smith said. “Their performance is based on their dedication to the sport. … This season we have taken our training to another level. The boys compete against each other every day in practice. Their dedication and hard work paid off at the county meet.

“Their performances at the county meet have definitely increased their motivation to continue working hard the rest of the season. Winning the county meet has also proven to them that hard work pays off.”

Dakota next takes to the water for the Macomb Area Conference Red Division meet, set for 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at a site to be determined.
