BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Going into Saturday afternoon’s home tilt, Joe D’Angelo said his Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood football team would have to have its best game of the season to pull off an upset against Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes.

“And we may need them to have an off day,” D’Angelo added.

Lakes simply hasn’t had one of those all year, and handed the Cranes their first loss of the season in a 36-10 final.

“We lost to a very good team,” D’Angelo said. “Our kids battled. I’m proud. We played hard until the very end. I don’t think the score reflected how close of a game this really was.”

Cranbrook trailed just 6-3 with less than a minute to play in the first half before Lakes connected on a long pass play and took a 14-3 lead at halftime.

Lakes (8-0) eventually led 29-3 before Cranbrook got a 19-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Santangelo to Kobi Russell.

Trevor McConnell had a 34-yard field goal in the first half.

Santangelo completed 21-of-38 passes for 182 yards in the loss. The Cranes rushed for just 17 total yards.

“We just couldn’t get the running game going,” D’Angelo said. “Lakes did a good job taking that away.”

Cranbrook, now 7-1, hosts Clarenceville at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
