FRASER — Troy High’s girls soccer team captured its second straight regional title with a 1-0 win over Grosse Pointe South at Fraser High June 8.

The Colts, Division 1 state runners-up last year, played in a state semifinal after press time. Check out our website at www.can dgnews.com/Sports for an update on the tournament, and a recap from Troy’s win over South and 2-0 victory over Anchor Bay in the regional semifinal.

“We knew we had a lot to live up to,” said Troy senior Irene Young, who scored a goal in both regional games.

Troy improved to 18-2-3 with the pair of wins.

“There was high expectations coming in,” Troy coach Brian Zawislak said. “The league prepares us really well for this moment. So the fact that we get to play, game in and game out, against the best teams in the state, this game is no different. We’ve been here a million times before.

“But it’s special, because we had the target on our backs.”

The “everybody against them” mentality has made Troy a close unit.

“Everybody has a positive attitude,” junior goalkeeper Allison Holland said. “We have each other’s back.”

According to Zawislak, the team’s defense, led by Holland as the “maestro,” played well in the regional and didn’t allow a single goal.

“The back line just played really well again,” the coach said after the South game. “They all were on the same page together. The players understand their roles in the back. They were following through with the execution on their end.”

The Division 1 state final is at noon June 16 on the campus of Michigan State University. The winner of Troy and Canton will play the winner of Rochester Adams and Okemos.

Elsewhere, Madison Heights Bishop Foley, Birmingham Marian and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep also won their respective regionals and advanced to the state semifinals round. Check out our website for more details.
