HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Under coach Trevor Warczinsky, the Center Line High girls basketball team has transformed into one of the best defensive teams in the Macomb Area Conference.

That defensive intensity was on display in the Panthers' 36-30 win against Harrison Township L'Anse Creuse Jan. 24 on the road.

Center Line (8-3, 4-3 Macomb Area Conference Gold Division) outscored the Lancers (5-8, 2-5 MAC Gold) 29-18 over the final three quarters to seal the win. The Panthers climbed out of a hole that didn't see the team take its first lead until early in the third quarter.

"I wish I could credit for it, but everything we are is because of the effort these girls give," Warczinsky said. "They come to battle every night and they showed that again tonight."

Center Line dressed just seven players and played only five for the majority of the game. The Panthers got the win despite being held nearly 14 points under their scoring average.

"These girls know what it takes to win," Warczinsky said. "They knew we were gonna be shorthanded, so they knew they'd have to play through some things, and they did that. They've learned to play through fatigue and still make plays."

L'Anse Creuse coach Lisa Downey said she thought her team became intimidated as Center Line ratcheted up its defense. The Lancers, who were without second-leading scorer Alaina Macksoud, went through a stretch in the fourth quarter where they didn't score for about five minutes. The game was tied at 26 with six minutes left before the Panthers ran off 10 in a row to take over.

Center Line sophomore Camryn Gibbs led her team with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Gibbs' 3-pointers were the only ones made in the game. Panthers senior guard Brooke Jinaud scored eight points.

L'Anse Creuse was led by sophomore forward Sydney Dhue and junior guard Tiffani Burgess, who scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Center Line's next game is against Warren Mott at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at home.

L'Anse Creuse next takes on Marine City at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 on the road.
