Royal Oak High fell to Birmingham Brother Rice 53-43 March 9 at Birmingham Groves in its Class A district semifinal. In the district opener March 7, the Ravens beat Bloomfield Hills Andover 46-37.

Royal Oak finished 10-11 overall and 8-6 in the Oakland Activities Association Blue Division, which was fourth place.

Clawson High received a first-round bye in its Class B district and then fell 58-47 to Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood March 9 in a semifinal at Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day.

STERLING HEIGHTS —Clinton Township Chippewa Valley won its first district title since 2005 in an exciting and somewhat unusual fashion.

The Big Reds beat Utica Ford II in the final seconds of the March 11 Class A district final at Ford thanks to a pair of free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining and major contributions from role players all night long.

STERLING HEIGHTS — The local boys basketball teams had their seasons come to an end in the district semifinals March 9 at Utica Ford II.

Utica High fell 61-52 to Clinton Township Chippewa Valley, and Utica Eisenhower lost by the same score to Utica Ford. The Chieftains and Eagles drew first-round byes.

Chieftains close out competitively
Utica, the lone representative from the Macomb Area Conference White Division in the Class A district, knew it would have its hands full facing off against the MAC Red champion Big Reds.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — The Warren Regina basketball team won a Class A regional championship March 10 by defeating Utica Ford II 49-47 at Grosse Pointe North.

After a back-and-forth battle, Regina senior Stephanie Berge converted on a layup with just 24 seconds left in the game to give her team the decisive advantage.

The score stood, and Regina won its first regional title since 2001.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — The Utica Ford II girls basketball team saw its season end with a 49-47 loss in the regional final to Warren Regina March 10 at Grosse Pointe North.

Try as they might, the Falcons could not match Regina on the offensive glass, which made the difference in the end.

“To get this far and have a game of swings like we had, it’s tough,” Ford II coach Matt Joseph said. “It’s tough for our seniors and for all our kids. They competed hard for 32 minutes.

MADISON HEIGHTS — Madison Heights Bishop Foley boys basketball coach Marc West wouldn’t let himself get worried as his squad found itself down by 14 points in the second quarter of the Catholic High School League C-D championship.

Not only were the Ventures trailing Detroit Loyola Feb. 27 at Calihan Hall in Detroit, but it was against a team that had beaten them five straight times over the past three seasons, including last year’s championship game.

The boys basketball season has come to a close for local squads.

Berkley High fell to Detroit Renaissance 62-52 March 9 at Southfield High in its Class A district semifinal. In the district opener, the Bears beat Oak Park High 67-60.

Berkley finished its season 12-9 overall and in fourth place in the Oakland Activities Association White Division.

Ferndale High met a similar fate. The Eagles lost to Detroit Mumford 67-41 March 9 at Warren Lincoln in their Class A district. The Eagles beat the host 73-45 March 7 to open the tournament.

The season came to a close for local boys basketball teams.

North Farmington High made it all the way to its Class A district final before falling to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 43-38 March 11 at Farmington High.

Prior to the title game, North Farmington beat Farmington Hills Harrison 53-35 March 9 in its semifinal and West Bloomfield High 54-49 March 7 in its quarterfinal.

Farmington High also lost to St. Mary’s. The Falcons fell 82-37 March 9 in its semifinal after beating Walled Lake Western 59-37 March 7.

CANTON — He started at one end of the bench and wouldn’t stop until he reached the other. He paused in front of each girl, offering a quick hug and an even bigger smile.

It was a small gesture, but it was a heartfelt ‘thank you.’

This was a year Farmington Hills Mercy basketball coach Gary Morris won’t soon forget, and this was the group of girls that made it all possible.

“It was an outstanding season,” Morris said after his team’s 47-35 loss to Canton High in a Class A regional March 10 at Canton.

The boys basketball season ended last week for the local squads as they all fell during the district tournament.

Grosse Pointe North lost in a March 9 Class A district semifinal at Grosse Pointe South in overtime against Detroit Finney 51-48. The Norsemen earlier beat St. Clair Shores Lakeview 48-36 in a first-round game.

Grosse Pointe South fell 57-48 to East Detroit in the other semi at South. The Blue Devils topped St. Clair Shores Lake Shore 62-54 in the first round.

The Grosse Pointe University Liggett girls basketball team clinched a regional championship March 10 by defeating Allen Park Cabrini 54-29 in the Class C tournament at Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest.

Last year, the Knights, 23-1 at press time, bowed out in the regional final to Detroit Allen in double overtime.

With the win, Liggett took its season a step further, into the March 15 quarterfinal against Saginaw Valley Lutheran, played after press time. The winner earns a trip to the state semifinals.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Clinton Township Chippewa Valley bested Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse 45-39 in a March 14 Class A regional semifinal at St. Clair Shores Lake Shore despite a slow start.

Chippewa (21-3 overall) advanced to take on East Detroit (21-2) in the regional final at 7 p.m. March 16 at Lake Shore. The winner of that game is scheduled to advance to a March 22 quarterfinal at the University of Detroit Mercy’s Calihan Hall.

SOUTHFIELD — Rochester Adams boys basketball beat Pontiac High 71-68 March 14 at Southfield High in a Class A regional semifinal.

Trailing by three points in the final seconds, Adams senior Nick Zekaj hit a 3-pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime.

“There was only a few seconds left. I got the ball, ran down the court, knew the time, threw it up and prayed to God that it went in,” he said.

It was the 11th victory in the Highlanders’ last 12 games.
