Last season’s record: 9-2

League: Macomb Area Conference Gold Division

Returning starters: Seven

First game: 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at Warren Cousino

Offensive keys:

Tower coach Al Gulick said this year’s team will be young and a bit inexperienced. The Titans will start junior quarterback Deric Austrackus, who takes over for Matt Bills. Bills is now a member of the University of Michigan football team. Gulick said Austrackus is working hard to make the position his own.

Senior running back Henry Brown should help Austrackus get acclimated to the job. Brown is coming off a 2,000-yard season in 2018. Junior running back Chandler Barnes will get his share of carries too. The Titans scored a school-record 441 points last season.

Defensive keys:

Athleticism should pay dividends for Tower this season, Gulick said. Barnes and Brown (linebackers) will be asked to make plays for the defense. The Titans held seven of 10 opponents to 13 points or less last season.

Coach’s outlook:

Tower started last season 8-0 on its way to a division title and a second straight playoff berth.

“Our kids are getting after it. I think we’re very athletic; we’ve got a lot of team speed. Five years ago, we were 1-8. We’re just going to work really hard to try to prepare week to week, game to game. There are a lot of new coaches and schemes in our league to look at,” Gulick said. “Hopefully the wins and losses will take care of themselves.”
