2019 Football Preview: Warren Mott

2018 Record: 7-3

By: C & G Sports Staff | Warren Weekly | Published July 19, 2019

Last season’s record: 7-3

League: Macomb Area Conference White Division

Returning starters: 12

First game: 7 p.m. Aug. 29 vs. Ann Arbor Skyline

Offensive keys:

Mott coach Tom Milanov, heading into his 20th year at the helm, believes team speed, work ethic and chemistry will all play major roles in the team’s success.

The Marauders will play two quarterbacks: senior Dylan VanConant and junior James Chaney. Senior running backs Curtis Hamilton and Romeo Jones, and senior wide receiver Jaren Hayes are expected to contribute.

The Marauders averaged 29.8 points per game — their best since 2013 — last season.

Defensive keys:

Mott also has speed on defense, Milanov said. The Marauders last season allowed just 18 points per game and held seven opponents to 14 points or less. Hayes and Jones (linebackers) are expected to anchor the defense.

Coach’s outlook:

Mott has made eight straight playoff trips and has played in 12 of the last 13 postseasons.

“We had an interesting year being that we played the Division 1 (Clinton Township Chippewa Valley) and D-2 (Warren De La Salle) state champions, so you see where we’re aiming to be,” Milanov said. “I think the MAC White will be balanced. Anybody can win it, but Grosse Pointe South is still the favorite. We started a lot of young guys (on the offensive line) last year, so we’re looking forward to seeing their maturity. We’re looking to have a great start and hopefully have success over the course of the season.”

vs. Ann Arbor Skyline (4-5) — 7 p.m. Aug. 29
Mott bested Skyline 35-12 last season in the teams’ first meeting. The Eagles, heading into their 10th year as a varsity program, have yet to make the playoffs. In 2018, the Marauders advanced to the postseason for the eighth straight year and the 12th time in 13 seasons.

vs. Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (4-5) — 7 p.m. Sept. 6
Mott routed LCN 40-7 last season to run its record in the series to 14-3. The Crusaders are 5-16 in their last 21 games.

vs. Grosse Pointe South (8-2) — 7 p.m. Sept. 13
South blanked Mott 38-0 last season in a matchup that ultimately decided the Macomb Area Conference White Division title. The Marauders and the Blue Devils have split 10 meetings.

at Grosse Pointe North (1-8) — 7 p.m. Sept. 20
Mott is 4-3 against North after last season’s 50-14 win. The Norsemen scored 93 points last season — the lowest in a season in program history.

at Roseville High (6-4) — 7 p.m. Sept. 27
Mott knocked off Roseville 42-7 last season in the first matchup since 2013. The Marauders are 11-3 against the Panthers overall.

vs. Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (14-0) — 7 p.m. Oct. 4
Mott’s record against Chippewa Valley dropped to 3-11 after a 49-21 setback last season. The Marauders have dropped three straight to the Big Reds by an average of 33 points per contest.

vs. Utica High (1-8) — 7 p.m. Oct. 11
Mott pushed its record against Utica to 7-5 after last season’s 43-6 win. The Marauders have won four straight in the series by a combined 150 points.

at Utica Ford II (3-6) — 7 p.m. Oct. 18
The Marauders have won five straight in the series, including a 28-point win in 2018.

at Sterling Heights Stevenson (4-5) — 7 p.m. Oct. 25
Mott is one of seven 2018 playoff teams Stevenson faces this season. The Marauders bested the Titans 22-14 in last year’s season finale for their third straight win in the series. The teams are 9-9 in the series.
