2019 Football Preview: Grosse Pointe South

2018 Record: 8-2

By: C & G Sports Staff | Grosse Pointe Times | Published July 16, 2019

Last season’s record: 8-2
League: Macomb Area Conference White Division
Returning starters: Eight
First game: 4 p.m. Aug. 30 vs. Birmingham Groves at Wayne State University
Offensive keys:
After collecting the most points in school history last season, the Blue Devils are left with just two returning starters from that group.

South will be breaking in a new quarterback in Alex Shaheen, and Kevin McCarron is expected to fill the void at running back after losing Conor McKenna to graduation.

Returning for the offense are two receivers in Will Johnson and AJ Benson. South coach Tim Brandon said the offense will look a bit different this year.

“We’re probably going to go away from our more base pro style, and we’re going to do a little bit more spread so we can get all those skill players on the field,” Brandon said.

Defensive keys:
South returns a bit more on defense, having six players back from last year’s group that allowed just 108 points.

It was the lowest number of points given up by South since 2002, when it allowed 103.

Linemen Nick Fannon and Owen Chen, along with defensive backs Johnson and Grant Hart are expected to anchor the unit.

“That’s our key component,” Brandon said of the defense. “We’re a defensive, ball control, move-the-chains type of school.”
Coach’s outlook:
South has made the state playoffs in nine of the last 10 seasons, and the Blue Devils are again hoping to compete in the league and find success in the postseason.

“We want to win the division again, make it our four straight, obviously beat (Grosse Pointe North) and then make a run in the playoffs,” Brandon said.
