The Utica Eisenhower boys soccer team enjoyed a stellar 2015 campaign, notching 15 wins and a district crown.

The high-powered offense outscored opponents by 50 goals and only suffered one loss in its final 10 regular season games.

Various coaches and media polls had Ike ranked in the state’s top five teams by the end of the year. Despite this, head coach Josh VanHouten considers that old news — only a building block to what he hopes is a better finish this season.

MACOMB – Despite an early set of mistakes, including three fumbles on their first four plays from scrimmage, Macomb Dakota notched a huge victory in their season opener, beating Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 35-28 on Thursday night.

The win gave Cougars coach Greg Baur a perfect start, as he made his debut as the Dakota head man against the defending Division 3 state champions.

UTICA — Chris Newell loves to wear stirrups.

The Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes product collected a state baseball championship during his senior campaign in 1991, always donning the high stockings with the Lakers.

Now he is pursuing another title at the helm of the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers. Night after night at Jimmy John’s Field in Utica, fans can spot a single set of bright blue and red socks on the manager in the dugout. Most of his players have chosen to ditch the throwback look and stick with the modern look of pants to their ankles.
