Prior to the beginning of the 2011-2012 girls basketball season, Madison Heights Lamphere was not likely to be mentioned as a team that had much of a chance to contend for a title.

The Rams finished last season with a 3-18 record and graduated their leading scorer, Stephanie Orloski. When you also consider that the Rams are taking to the court without a senior among them this season, the prospects for being near the top of the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division didn’t appear to be too strong.

It’s no secret that times have been tough lately for the East Detroit girls basketball team.

Last season, the Shamrocks went 0-21, and are off to a 0-9 start to their 2011-2012 campaign.

Fraser High boys swim coach Bob Ogilvy admits that at the beginning of the season, his team wasn’t exactly sure how good it could be.

Last season, the Sterling Heights High girls basketball team won the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division title.

And while they did win the division by a relatively comfortable margin of three games, the team that posed the biggest threat to the Stallions’ quest for that title was Macomb L’Anse Creuse North. The Crusaders handed Sterling Heights its only division loss last season, as the MAC Gold foes split their two game series.

The squads will meet up for the first time this season at 7 p.m. Jan. 26 at LCN.

Moving from one division to another can sometimes require an adjustment period for teams participating in high school athletics, no matter the sport.

Last season the Chippewa Valley boys swim team won the Macomb Area Conference White Division championship, and following the title, the Big Reds were moved into the MAC Red Division for this season. While the season is still relatively young, Chippewa Valley may be putting other teams on notice that it doesn’t exactly intend to enter the division quietly.

When consideration is given as to which teams are most likely to contend for the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division title in girls varsity basketball this season, the two that seem to be getting most of the attention are Sterling Heights High and Macomb L’Anse Creuse North.

Given that the Stallions and the Crusaders were the top two teams in the division last season, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that they are the ones stealing the spotlight in the 2011-2012 campaign. But the team most likely to sneak in under the radar just may be Warren Lincoln.
